Sagittarius New Moon

Regular readers might know that I’m a bit of a pop music tragic. I use songs and lyrics to explain certain feelings or situations. In fact, up until a couple of years ago, all my blog post titles for lunations and planets in signs used to be just that – song lyrics. If I was still doing that, This New Moon, the Sagittarius New Moon would be titled “The Whole Of The Moon” because that song by The Waterboys is exactly what this New Moon feels like.

I spoke about wings
- You just flew

I wondered, I guessed and I tried – You just knew

I sighed -
And you swooned

I saw the crescent
-You saw the whole of the moon

The New Moon in Sagittarius is about hope, spontaneity, optimism, faith and adventure. Wherever it falls in your chart is where you need an injection of these things. For that reason, this is one of my favourite New Moons of the year. It’s the opportunists New Moon. It’s not so much glass half full or half empty, it’s, ‘wow that half was great and now there’s room for more, so fill me up!’

Sagittarius is the Seeker, the Optimist, the Gypsy, the Student of Life and the Preacher of Faith. It follows that wherever Sagittarius falls in your chart is where you are being asked to seek out people and experiences to help you expand beyond your comfort zone on this great adventure we call Life. It’s where you actively look for the horizon, focus on the future and the possibility of possibility, and ask the bigger questions.

Every so often we need to re-discover this part of ourselves – the part that will take a little (measured) risk, the part that wants to be excited by what’s next, the part that wants your heart to race (even just a little) at what you have just (or soon will) experienced.

The New Moon is your reminder to do just that. It can be like a recharge on your faith and excitement switch so if life is feeling a tad so-so, you have the opportunity to do something about it. Notice I said you have the opportunity to something about it? Yep, as with all new starts, passivity simply won’t cut it.

It doesn’t need to be difficult – it could be as simple as trying a new cuisine next time you eat out or, pick up a book on a different subject.

The other thing with the New Moon in Sagittarius is that you might be less afraid to look up and out, to take that leap of faith. Maybe you feel you have outgrown your present situation? Maybe it’s time to take the reins into your hands and gallop off into the sunset? Maybe it’s time to be honest with yourself and those around you? Maybe it’s time to reach for the Moon? Take a magic carpet ride? Dream big? There is no limit to the possibilities.

Doing it for yourself…

As you probably know by now, this site isn’t about telling you what will happen, but rather giving you the tools to attempt to identify the themes for yourself. That’s the DIY part of the tagline. If you’ve been reading along, you should know how to find where the New Moon is happening in your chart. If you’re new to this site (welcome), duck across and check out this post before you go any further.

The position you’re looking for is 26 Sagittarius 31’, or thereabouts. This is the area of life that you’re being asked to expand, learn and grow through experience. It’s where you have the opportunity to push some personal boundaries.

This is the 10th house for me and is square my Moon. I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about “self-care” and what I want to do – professionally – that will make my heart sing. It’s those things I’ll be setting intentions around this month. I’ll be writing them down with the Sagittarian spark of freedom and soaring dreams in mind. The sky is not the limit and boundaries are there to be leapt over.

The Moon is natally in my 1st house and rules my 5th, so as always my New moon story will have an outcome in the 5th In order to be true to my Moon, the goals I’ll set for my career will have 5th house creativity in mind.

As for you? Find where 26 Sagittarius is in your chart.

  • How do the concerns of this house make you feel?
  • How would you like to feel about them?
  • What positive steps can you take over the next four weeks to minimise the gap between how you feel about this are and how you’d like to feel?

Now, let’s set our intentions. Think about the area of life you’re focusing on and set small achievable targets. Make sure that you do at least one thing towards this goal this month. If you’re unsure where to start, check out this post. Because we’re talking about Sagittarius, think about the big picture and pretend there are no fences in the way. You can plan the steps out next month when Capricorn hosts the New Moon.

Venus in Sagittarius

Venus is about to move out of steely and intense Scorpio into Sagittarius.

Sagittarius is associated with exploration beyond your boundaries- and finding pleasure in that.

Sure this could mean planning a holiday or taking a holiday, but it could also mean reading an unfamiliar genre, or exploring your spirituality, taking your learning to another level. It could mean having fun outdoors, doing some tramping or hiking (Sagittarius is all about using those big muscle groups), gathering a group of friends and trying a new cuisine.

Anyways, if you want to know more about Venus in Sagittarius, I just happened to have prepared something (much) earlier. You’ll find it here.

Doing it for yourself…

We all have Sagittarius somewhere in our chart, and it’s this part of life that Venus will be bestowing her presence on. It’s this part of life that you’ll find pleasure and expansion in. It’s this area of life that you might take up study in, or push your boundaries in. It’s this part of your life that you could find yourself asking yourself ‘why not?’ or ‘how hard can it be?’ It will require faith, but only with discomfort comes growth.

In my chart, Venus is transiting the 10th house (I’m working with whole houses more and more these days). I’m already into production planning for next year, but more from a take a goal and double it viewpoint. It matches the message I saw written on the toilet wall in the cafe I work in each Friday:

Dream Big – Work Harder

(As an aside, it wasn’t a graffiti message – one wall in each toilet is painted in blackboard paint and there are buckets of chalk attached to the walls.)

Anyway, the thing is, I’m really aiming high and wide and trying things I haven’t done before. No doubt you’ll hear all about it through 2018.

If you don’t have your chart, read this post on how to get one.

If you don’t know what the houses mean, check out series 1 of the Toolbox or this post.

If you don’t have any idea about your birth time, or can’t be faffed working it out, you can follow the solar guide:

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Sagittarius, Venus will be transiting your 1st house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Capricorn, Venus will be transiting your 12th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aquarius, Venus will be transiting your 11th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces, Venus will be transiting your 10th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aries, Venus will be transiting your 9th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus, Venus will be transiting your 8th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Gemini, Venus will be transiting your 7th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Cancer, Venus will be transiting your 6th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Leo, Venus will be transiting your 5th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Virgo, Venus will be transiting your 4th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Libra, Venus will be transiting your 3rd house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Scorpio, Venus will be transiting your 2nd house.

Venus will be in Sagittarius until 25/12/17.

In my chart, Venus will begin her transit of Sagittarius in the 9th house, and finish it in the 10th. The 9th is about (amongst other things) travel (not just the physical act of travelling, but also mind expansion stuff), publishing, higher learning.

I’m planning a holiday to celebrate my 50th birthday next year. We’re looking to explore Thailand a little more, or maybe take a trip to Vietnam. Sometimes I think there’s almost as much fun to be had in the planning…almost…

Mars in Sagittarius…

shutterstock_197127548

I don’t know about you, but Mars Retrograde was hard…so hard. Sure, Mars doesn’t like to be travelling in any direction other than forward, but I tend to think the worst part of this particular phase was his period back in Scorpio. I have Mars in Scorpio natally so, generally speaking, do Scorpio well- and Mars in Scorpio particularly well…yet it’s been tough.

Anyways, Mars moves back into Sagittarius today, and will be in this sign until the end of September. Sagittarius is about the fire of the quest- expansion beyond your boundaries. Wherever Sagittarius is in your chart is where you’re now being fired up to travel further. So, if you’ve been selling yourself short, or languishing under your doona, get ready to move.

Want to know more? What this means for you? Check out this post– all the relevant linky bits are in it.

When you know, you know…you know? Full Moon in Sagittarius…

Crush_image

I’ve been struggling with faith a bit lately. Not just the whole believe in yourself thing, but the whole everything will be ok, or will work itself out how it needs to work out thing.

Yet that’s the message of tomorrows Full Moon: belief…in the bigger picture, the greater purpose, the end result, the horizon.

It’s about knowing that no matter what else happens, the earth will keep turning, the rain will fall and the sun will come out. In between will be rainbows and dark stormy clouds, but ultimately, somehow, it will all be ok.

The Sagittarius Full Moon is a time where we balance what we know versus what we know.

With all of the activity currently in Gemini, there are plenty of questions being asked, plenty of information being gathered and plenty of data being analysed. With Mercury retrograde, we’re revisiting a lot of things too. This is the stuff we know….or think we know.

At the other end of the scale is the stuff we know because we just do. It’s our faith that at the end of a rainy day will be a glass of red wine and the optimism that tomorrow will be better.

At this Full Moon, Sagittarius (the Moon) is associated with truth, faith, optimism and belief…what we know in our heart whereas Gemini (the Sun) is associated with information and data…what we know in our head. What truth do we know but haven’t yet acknowledged? There is no hiding from it under this Full Moon.

Wherever this Full Moon falls is where you need to use this faith to go further, travel wider, expand your boundaries.

All of it is pointing to the message to have a little faith, ride the unexpected stuff and see beyond the rain to the rainbows…and let go enough to enjoy the ride. At least that’s how I’m reading it. Like when Crush, the Sea Turtle on Finding Nemo said, “You never really know. But when you know, you’ll know. You know?”

Anyways, I think that’s what this Full Moon is about.

Doing it for yourself…

For a refresher of the steps, check out this post or click onto the Full Moon pic on the side-bar.

Where is this happening for you? Does the Full Moon make any aspects to planets or points in your chart?

  • If you have planets at 0-3 degrees of Sagittarius, they will be conjunct the Full Moon
  • If you have planets at 0-3 Gemini, they will be opposite the Full Moon
  • If you have planets at 0-3 Pisces or Virgo, they will be square the Full Moon
  • If you have planets at 0-3 Leo or Aries, they will be trine the Full Moon
  • If you have planets at 0-3 Libra or Aquarius, they will be sextile the Full Moon

Don’t forget to include chart points as well (ie house cusps- especially the 1st, 4th, 7th & 10th).

1 Sagittarius 13’ is in my 9th house. This one is all about what I learn, what I’m learning, what I’ve learnt, what I know, what I know, what I believe. Being trine Saturn, it’s also about structures and stability- all of which I’ve been questioning over the last few months. You see, logically I know that things will pan out just fine, but knowing it is something I’ve struggled with.

Using basic transit theory:

  • I’ll start to feel this in the 1st house (where the Moon and Saturn fall natally for me).
  • The action will all be 9th house stuff (the house where the Full Moon falls)
  • The outcome will be in the 5th, 11th and 12th houses (the houses ruled by the Moon and Saturn)

I have my own theories how this will pan out- especially when combined with the transits I have happening in the background.

If you’re not sure where this is for you, check out the info below, and refer back to Series 1 of the Toolbox for pointers on what each of the houses means, then reflect on how this could be manifesting for you.

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Gemini, this Full Moon falls in your 7th house. Look to the 1st for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Cancer, this Full Moon falls in your 6th house. Look to the 12th for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Leo, this Full Moon falls in your 5th house. Look to the 11th for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Virgo, this Full Moon falls in your 4th house. Look to the 10th for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Libra, this Full Moon falls in your 3rd house. Look to the 9th for balance.
  • If your Sun of Ascendant is in Scorpio, this Full Moon falls in your 2nd house. Look to the 8th for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Sagittarius, this Full Moon falls in your 1st house. Look to the 7th for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Capricorn, this Full Moon falls in your 12th house. Look to the 6th for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aquarius, this Full Moon falls in your 11th house. Look to the 5th for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces, this Full Moon falls in your 10th house. Look to the 4th for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aries, this Full Moon falls in your 9th house. Look to the 3rd for balance.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus this Full Moon falls in your 8th house. Look to the 2nd for balance.

Mars in Sagittarius: Don’t Hold Back…

shutterstock_197127548

While I’ve been actively seeking escape routes during February, Mars has been transiting my 9th house.

In this time I’ve had the energy boost required to book the majority of my travel for the year. It felt like it needed to be done. That having those trips in the calendar was not just the silver lining, light in the tunnel, (insert other appropriate cliché) to look forward to, but it was also a constant reminder as to why I’m working as hard as I have been.

The Balinese laugh at it: at how we work so hard all year to afford a holiday to relax from all the hard work we do to pay for the holiday. When you put it like that…

Anyways, my point is, while Mars has been transiting my 9th house, he’s been activating 9th house concerns. That’s what happens when Mars transits around your chart- he adds energy and potency to whatever part of life he’s travelling through.

Of course, the 9th isn’t just about travel- it’s also about higher learning, religion and spirituality, publishing, broadcasting, teaching. It’s anything that takes us from our current view or range of experiences and pushes us beyond.

The 9th is a cadent house, and we know from early Tuesday Toolboxes, that means it’s a house where we learn.

While Mars was in Scorpio, the transit was of a Scorpio flavour: deep, intense, with razor-sharp focus. The energy you apply to the house being transited already has that type of energy- the transit will simply heighten it.

Wherever Mars is transiting is also where you’ll be wanting to asset your own will…and in doing so, may come into conflicts with others who don’t necessarily agree with either a) your view of the world or b) what you’re doing to go after whatever it is that you’re hungry for.

That’s another thing about Mars- the hunger.

The way in which you use your Mars is, as with most things, your call. You can be bad Mars (aggressive, passive aggressive, irritable, argumentative, pugnacious and looking for a fight- any fight) or you can be good Mars (assertive, confident, and actively expressing your anger and resentment in a positive way).

If you’ve been doing a lot of complaining about how you never get what you want, and things always happen to you, and there’s always someone else getting more…etc…take a good look at what and how you’re fighting for.

It’s through frustration and inactivity- or the perception of inactivity- that bad Mars comes into the ring- often simply for the sake of doing something, anything. If you find yourself feeling like this, lace up the trainers and use your energy in a more productive way.

So, what does this have to do with anything? Quite simply Mars is about to move into Sagittarius. This will be like a re-boot for whatever part of life is ruled by Sagittarius for you.

In my case, it’s the 10th– that’s work, career, authority figures, public stuff. I’ve had a preview while Saturn has been making himself at home here.

Want to know more about Mars in Sagittarius? Here’s one I prepared earlier, and another I prepared even earlier than that.

Venus in Sagittarius

If I was to close my eyes and imagine what Venus in Sagittarius would look like, it would be this: a group of backpackers from a heap of different countries travelling together in a combi van with surfboards on the roof up the coast to Byron Bay, swapping cultures and languages over a beer in the beachside pub. As they travel, the group expands- collecting people along the way.

Venus in Sagittarius is setting off on the road less travelled, broadening horizons through travel and philosophy and ideas and cultures. Venus in Sagittarius is following a Guru to an ashram in India; on a yoga retreat in Bali; gazing longingly at Indiana Jones in teacher mode at University; or finding love across the seas.

Where Venus in Scorpio is love in deep water, in Sagittarius she is a firework. Where Venus in Scorpio is intense, in Sagittarius she is light and fun. Where Venus in Scorpio wants to possess and control, in Sagittarius she wants to run free and experience everything the world has to offer (and more)… preferably with other free spirits. Where Venus in Scorpio wants all of you in a complete emotional merging, Venus in Sagittarius may not be around for garbage night- not unless she wants to be. Venus in Scorpio is slow to trust, Venus in Sagittarius has boundless optimism.

It is here that the similarities between Pisces and Sagittarius (the 2 signs ruled by Jupiter) are at their most obvious. Both signs are escape artists; both signs have their eyes very firmly fastened on the future; both signs are just a tad allergic to the here and now and will break out in hives at the mention of the word “reality”; and both signs will roll their eyes back in their heads and self destruct rather than be chained or fenced in. Both signs have faith.

Venus in Sagittarius doesn’t like love to be too heavy. Sure she likes to philosophise, but not about her relationships. And it will be in the plural- Venus in Sagittarius doesn’t like to settle down too young*, at least not before she has had a chance to test her wings out, sow her wild oats, so to speak.

And she likes honesty…to the point of bluntness. If she tells you that “I’m just not that into you” that’s exactly what she means.

“Is my bum fat in these jeans?” Yep…but a man with Venus in Sagittarius probably likes a woman with a bit of cushioning in that area, so to speak. In fact, a man with Venus in Sag may be more of a bums and legs man than a tits man.

He will also want someone he can share life’s adventure with, someone with ideals and faith, a friend, a fellow traveller. Men with Venus in Sagittarius may be drawn to choose a partner from a different culture, different circle, perhaps someone a little exotic. She might be someone who is in touch with her own spirituality, a Teacher (with a capital T), a writer, someone who likes to broadcast or publicise a message. Diversity is paramount.

If you want someone to discuss culture, religion & politics with, choose Venus in Sagittarius. Want to party all night and rise at dawn to catch the sunset from the top of a mountain? Choose Venus in Sagittarius.

But if you are into analysing the state of your relationship or emotional dramas? Move on. Quickly. Venus in Sagittarius already has. He doesn’t play games & doesn’t want someone who will do this. He doesn’t have time for manipulation, tact or flattery. So if you like those things, stay clear of Mr Sagittarius. While you are crying into your drink, he will have moved on- not having any idea what he said to upset you…nor will he care greatly. He’s not cruel, but he is often oblivious to the hearts he leaves behind.

Having said that, Venus in Sagittarius has the optimism and generosity of Jupiter. He would give you his last $20, because seriously, Dude, there will always be more around the corner.

Venus in Sagittarius likes to play the field, check out what the fillies are like in the other paddock and, shall we say, experiment a bit. For all those people who have come onto this site asking “how do I get a Sagittarius to commit?” the answer is clear. You don’t.  Sadge is a fun date, a great mate, but getting her to commit is often a matter of being in the right place at the right time. He won’t do anything he doesn’t want to do before he wants to do it- and why should he? Try and break her in and you will only break her spirit…plus, she will probably do the bolt at the first possible opportunity. Besides, it was that love of freedom and spirit that you fell in love with in the first place.

Unlike Venus in Scorpio, Venus in Sagittarius will not try to own you, and will be over that fence if you try and own her. As for trying to make him jealous? Forget it- he doesn’t do manipulative games. But treat the relationship as two equal partners out on the adventure of a lifetime and it could just last a lifetime. One thing is for certain, with Venus in Sagittarius, there will never be a dull moment.

This sound like you? If you have Venus in Sagittarius, Venus in close aspect to Jupiter (especially the conjunction) or Venus in the 9th house, you will identify with this post. If you are a Sagittarius woman, this is also you- in fact your theme song could very well be Fleetwood Macs Gypsy.

*Where Venus is conjunct or in difficult aspect to Saturn, she will take all of this much more seriously…

Doing it for yourself…

Venus transits may be fleeting, but for the (usually) few weeks that they are in a particular part of your chart, is where you don’t need to work too hard to find pleasure, indulgence and balance. It’s in these areas of life too that interactions with others may be more rewarding.

Pull your chart out to see where this is happening for you- if you’re not sure how to do this- or what the houses mean- refer back to the earlier episodes of Tuesday Toolbox.

As an example, for me, Sagittarius falls in my 9th and 10th. Books, travel, philosophy, people from other cultures, ideas from different viewpoints…these will all bring me pleasure and help me attain balance for the first half of this transit. Once Venus moves into my 10th house, these things will help me maintain my perspective at work.

Try it for yourself.

If your rising sign is Sagittarius, Venus is in your 1st house

If your rising sign is Capricorn, Venus is in your 12th house

If your rising sign is Aquarius, Venus is in your 11th house

There’s this town on the North Coast of NSW called Byron Bay. It’s famous lighthouse sits at the most easterly point on the Australian mainland. You could say that it’s east of everything.

Long associated with alternative life-stylers and the Age of Aquarius, Byron is a highly spiritual town where no single faith dominates, yet everyone believes in something- whether that be a traditional religion, something a tad more alternative, the organic food movement, freedom of speech, the environment, real estate dollars…

It’s a town where visitors range from drop-ins from the multiple occupancies out of town, to backpackers, to celebrity glitz, to creatives, to families, to festival goers (writers, folk and jazz), to the more pretentious monied types.

It’s a town where travellers from all around the world gather to party, to drink, to write, to play, to paint, to talk about experiences, and to learn from their fellow wanderers and to find their own personal faith, truth and belief.

It’s a town for travellers, for gypsies, for seekers of truth, for philosophers, for students of life, for those in search of a spiritual guru, for those who want to preach their own personal gospel, to those who want to surf all that life has to offer (and more)…

It’s a town that lives and breathes Sagittarius.

It’s also probably got more kombi vans per head of population than anywhere else in the world.

Sagittarius is the sign of the optimist, the eternal gypsy, the student of life and the preacher of faith.

The Sagittarian quest is to find meaning and truth and, in doing so, to make a difference. In order to do this, horizons must be expanded, minds must be blown, fences must be jumped over, sparks must be lit. So Sadge wanders the earth- both physically through travel, and metaphorically through ideas, philosophy and spirituality.

Sagittarius gathers the knowledge and understands his desires through the gathering of new experiences. So he says yes. … to everything. Say yes to learning, say yes to faith, say yes to integrity, say yes to adventure, say yes to travel, say yes to bungy jumping off a platform into the Waikato, say yes to another drink… just say yes.

Horizons have no boundaries, no beginning and no end. Sadge aims for as far as he can see, but as we know, the horizon is a fluid target. For every challenge conquered, there is another in view and then another and still another. Fences and partitions are constraints to be jumped over and galloped away from. In fact, the one thing that Sagittarius fears is entrapment or restrictions being placed on his personal freedom.

But what does Sagittarius do with all of this knowledge and experience? He teaches and he preaches and he spreads the word to the masses. Unlike Saturn ruled Capricorn, Sagittarius does not teach life lessons- he talks about Life, Belief and Truth. In this way, Sagittarius is associated with the world of publishing, law and religion. Care needs to be taken to ensure publicity and teaching does not wander into arrogance and dogmatism- Sagittarius sometimes needs reminding that there is more than one true faith.

Sagittarius is honest to a degree that can be seen as tactless. This can result severe “foot in mouth” disease as Sadge just says what he wants and bolts off to the next thing, leaving his victim in horrified at the truth they have just been told. Sadge, is, of course, oblivious to whatever damage has been done.

Another Sadge shadow is a reflection of their boundless optimism- without boundaries, sometimes you just don’t know when enough is enough- you don’t know when to stop. A Sagittarius without something to believe in, without a cause to follow or without a quest can escape into the world of Too Much- too much gambling, too much alcohol, too much partying, too much food… too much. And when you are totally convinced that you will always land on your feet? Well, that just means that sometimes you take too much risk.

In the body, Sagittarius rules the bum and the thighs. People with strong Sagittarian signatures in their chart, particularly a Sadge rising, will have inherent strength in this area. All the better to leap over fences and gallop off into the sunset. As with all things astrological, though, this can also be the part of the body that suffers when you’re not being true to your Sadge calling- so get moving!

Speaking of things to jump over or off, Rotorua and Queenstown in New Zealand are also towns devoted to the pursuit of the next great adventure. If there is something to jump off, a river to rampage or a new and exciting way of pushing ones personal boundaries, the Kiwis will have identified it. But again, all of this isn’t there simply for the sake of the adrenaline rush. In pushing your own boundaries, you learn more about your own truth, about your own beliefs and your own personal strengths.

Think about that while the Sun is in Sagittarius- especially if you find yourself held back by fear and anxieties. Especially if you’re a Sadge and you’re questioning your beliefs, doubting your faith, and afraid to jump your personal fences. What are you saying no to, that actually needs a yes?

Look to the house in your chart with Sagittarius on the cusp. This is the area of life that will be energized for the next month. Are you having doubts in that part of life? Has your faith disappeared? Are you no longer taking (measured) risks because you’ve lost confidence?

This month, open your heart, your mind and your soul and challenge yourself. It could be something involving adrenaline or adventure, or it could be taking a chance on a rejection, learning something new, considering a new point of view, or maybe even moving your body in a new way.

Take care not to over do it, or risk more than is appropriate, but every time you push your comfort zone, you also grow your confidence…and that helps push aside the fear.
