Something about seeing things from a different angle…

Moon in Aquarius

Part of the difficulty with trying to establish a career is a freelance writer is coming up with new angles on established subjects to pitch to editors.

Actually, I lie- the hardest part is actually doing the pitching, pressing that send button when the outcome is very likely to be silence. But that’s another story, and one I’m getting through….pitch by pitch.

The need for a new angle is especially important when it comes to travel writing. Let’s face it, is there really anywhere left to explore?

The cynics would say absolutely not- been there, done that and bought the t shirt.

The thing is, there is always a new angle, a different way of looking at a country or a city that’s been written about to death. Sometimes the angle is so obvious that you wonder how it is that no one has done it before. Maybe they have…the trick is getting it in front of an editor who hasn’t seen it before, who hasn’t read it in your words or who hasn’t published a story on that city/attraction/country/whatever for some time.

That’s the challenge that I’m facing today with the wealth of notes I’ve come back from Taiwan with (don’t forget to duck across to and anyways to check out some of the posts).

My point? The Aquarius Moon is a good opportunity to do just that- look at a situation, a problem, an idea from a different perspective.

Perhaps it’s a work problem, perhaps a situation at home that’s bothering you, perhaps you just need a bolt from the blue for things to become clear. Sometimes you need to look at the peripheral, look at it backwards, come at it from the side…sometimes you need to assume that nothing can be assumed.

Today, that might just happen- if you’re prepared to take a different road to the one normally travelled.
