As I do each month, before writing this New Moon post I checked out what was happening last year and what intentions I’d set. If you’re interested, that post is here. This time last year we’d made the decision to sell up and move – so that meant a massive de-cluttering project and fixing anything that needed fixing.
I was working full time and doing a long commute each day, while hubby was at home taking care of all the DIY things that I used to do. Even though we both worked full-time, in our relationship I was the painter, the gardener, the fixer, the keeper of accounts. That was the way that I liked it – most of the time. It helped me feel in control, on top of things, as though I could do it all. It gave me a feeling of purpose and usefulness.
Don’t get me wrong, he did stuff too – we’ve always been quite good like that, and he’s always done his fair share around the house – but these things, the things that made a visible difference, they’ve always been my domain. Besides, he hated painting and I loved it, and he hated anything in the garden that didn’t involve a power tool, and I loved it. He worked with accounts every day and didn’t want to do the same when he got home, whereas I had a deep-rooted fear of being that woman who had no idea about the money. It worked.
And for those times where it got too much it also gave me something concrete to yell at him about. At those times I changed from being the helpful, practical one who knew where everything was, and where it was up to, into the martyr who was convinced she was being taken for granted. Hello, Virgo on the 7th.
So when he wasn’t working and took over these tasks – as he had to do in order to get the house and our lives ready for a sea-change – I resented it. The dynamics of our relationship had changed and it unsettled me. He was enjoying the change – I found it difficult to accept. If I wasn’t doing everything, what was the use of me? Some tweaking and adjustment was absolutely required to keep things on track.
Where Virgo is in your chart is where you tend not to want to ask for help. It’s where you’re self-sufficient (or at least think you are). It’s where you set your own bar quite high and where you work things out and make stuff happen. It’s where you might feel that you’re taken for granted and it’s where you might look for perfection – or, if not perfection, than to make things just a little bit better, or maybe a bit better again.
Where Virgo is in your chart might also be where you focus on what’s not right, and overlook what is, actually, possibly pretty good. “If only x happened, I’d be happy.” “If only he was like x, I’d be happy.” “If only I had more x, I’d be happy.” “If only I weighed xkgs less, I’d be happy.” I could go on.
It’s where you consider yourself self-sufficient, but it’s also where you’re most unlikely to be satisfied. So you continue to try and manage and control and organise in an effort to make it all perfect – because then you’ll be happy.
The thing is, you’ll never be able to quite get there – it’s unrealistic to expect to. There are times where you need to actually say out loud “I’m enough / my relationship is enough / my house is enough / my job is enough…” You get the idea.
None of that means that you have to give up trying to improve what needs improving – just that you might also need to be content with a few tweaks here and there as things get out of alignment. Sometimes it’s a spring clean rather than a clean sweep that’s required.
At this New Moon go easy on yourself, retreat if you need to, and remember that it’s the flaws that make life – and people interesting.

Now, let’s set our intentions. Think about the area of life you’re focusing on and set small achievable targets. Make sure that you do at least one thing towards this goal this month. Because we’re talking about Virgo, resist the urge to bite off more than you can chew – failure to meet your own exacting standards could have you giving up on your goals.
