Tuesday Toolbox 9

So anyways, last week we had a look back at what we’ve covered so far, and started to break down the signs.

The last piece in the sign puzzle is modality.

Modality is about how each sign behaves.

Does it actively seek to initiate action? Maybe it’s all about consolidating, conserving or securing things. Perhaps it’s constantly learning and adjusting or adapting along the way?

Does this concept sound familiar? It sounds pretty much like the discussions we had around angular, succedent and cadent houses, doesn’t it?

When it comes to signs we refer to:

  • Cardinal energy– those signs that seek to take or initiate action: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn…the signs associated with The Cross of Matter or angular houses. Although these signs are the starters- the instigators- of the action, they don’t make changes and initiate action for the sake of it…ok, sometimes they do- have you ever seen a bored Aries? They usually need to be prompted to act when something threatens the survival of what they are charged with. e.g. home, self, authority, goals etc
  • Fixed signs– those signs that seek to consolidate, conserve, build, support or secure: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius…the signs associated with succedent houses. Each of these signs are stubborn in their own way, and generally need to be made pretty uncomfortable before they’re forced into change. This makes them the perfect people to get something finished…but not so great to get it started.
  • Mutable or flexible signs– those signs that seek to learn, adjust and adapt to changing conditions: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces…the signs associated with cadent houses. The mutables are not known for being great  finishers!

Have you noticed how in each element there is one cardinal, one fixed and one mutable sign?

Knowing your modality will teach you a lot about your attitude to life…and to change.

We exist in a society where to be seen as being change resistant is a bad thing, yet in some cases, the change isn’t required. Besides- how would things get built if it weren’t for those who stick with the project to the end?

On the other end of the scale, to hang on stubbornly to the way things are simply because the future is unknown or insecure isn’t always the answer either.

Most of us are somewhere in the middle.

Doing it for yourself…

How many planets do you have in each modality? Score them if you like- using 2 pts for the Sun and Moon, and 1pt for each of the others. Why not take it one step further and include your Rising sign- the sign that’s on your Ascendant…that absolute left hand side of your chart. Give it 2 pts too.

Do you favour one modality more than another? What does this say about your ability to seek, accept and ride through change? Are you a starter or a finisher? Are you in it for the long haul, or do you change your loyalties and your mind with the weather?
