Saturn in Capricorn

The symbol for Saturn is a little like an h.

The symbol for Capricorn is like a stylised V.

While Saturn is in Capricorn, what part of my chart is it moving through?

If you know your birth time, you can cast your own chart using these instructions.

Otherwise simply follow Solar astrology as below:

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aries- this will be in your 10th house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus- this will be in your 9th house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Gemini- this will be in your 8th house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Cancer- this will be in your 7th house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Leo- this will be in your 6th house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Virgo- this will be in your 5th house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Libra- this will be in your 4th house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Scorpio- this will be in your 3rd house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Sagittarius- this will be in your 2nd house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Capricorn- this will be in your 1st house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aquarius- this will be in your 12th house

If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces- this will be in your 11th house

Where else will it impact?

If the transit is happening in your 1st house, look also to the 7th, 10th & 4th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 2nd house, look also to the 8th, 11th & 5th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 3rd house, look also to the 9th, 12th & 6th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 4th house, look also to the 10th, 1st & 7th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 5th house, look also to the 11th, 2nd & 8th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 6th house, look also to the 12th, 3rd & 9th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 7th house, look also to the 1st, 4th & 10th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 8th house, look also to the 2nd, 5th & 11th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 9th house, look also to the 3rd, 6th & 12th for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 10th house, look also to the 4th, 7th & 1st for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 11th house, look also to the 5th, 8th & 2nd for impacts

If the transit is happening in your 12th house, look also to the 6th, 9th & 3rd for impacts

Analysing Saturn Transits

What will happen? Here are some guidelines (taken from, as always. The Eagle and the Lark, by Bernadette Brady):

  • What house is Saturn in natally? What house is the planet being transited in by Saturn natally? These areas will be where the transit starts to happen.
  • What house is Saturn transiting? This is where the main action will be occurring.
  • What house is ruled by Saturn natally? What house is ruled natally by the planet being transited? These are the areas of life that will be affected by the outcome of the transit.
  • What is the nature of the aspect? This will tell you whether the transit will be “easy” or “hard”- and that doesn’t mean “good” or “bad.”

The Nature of the aspect

When Saturn is conjunct a planet or chart point, her energy is fused with that planet. She takes over that planet. Her energy is stronger than the planet she is invading. When Saturn is in Capricorn- this will be any other planet in Capricorn.

When Saturn is opposing a planet or chart point, “someone or something “out there” is doing something to you and furthermore, it’s their fault.” A decision is necessary. When Saturn is in Capricorn, he will oppose any planets you have in Cancer.

When Saturn is square a planet or chart point, there is tension and frustration- something happens which will force you “into a mode of action that you have not yet explored…results stimulate actions rather than decisions.” This will be any planets you have in Libra or Aries.

When Saturn is trine a planet or chart point whatever is going to happen will happen quickly and relatively easily. Obstacles will be removed. This doesn’t mean that it will be good or painless, just that whatever is going to happen will happen quickly and relatively easily! This will be the case with planets in Virgo or Taurus.

When Saturn is sextile a planet or chart point opportunities may arise. As there are Feminine signs involved (Scorpio, Pisces) don’t expect an opportunity to just drop into your lap- you’ll need to keep your eyes open. Also, remember that not all opportunities turn up wearing a t-shirt or sign identifying them as such – especially not Saturn opportunities. Whether you do anything with that is up to you.

When Saturn is inconjunct or quincunx a planet or chart point, there will be a change, separation of letting go of something- whether you are ready for it or not. Brady describes this as being as if someone has stepped onto the stage, stopped the play, changes the actors and the script or moved everyone to a new theatre. This is any planet in Gemini or Leo.

  • Any planet or chart point in Capricorn will be conjunct Saturn at some point over the next 2 ½ years.
  • Any planet or chart point in Cancer will be opposite Saturn at some point over the next 2 ½ years.
  • Any planet or chart point in Aries or Libra will be square Saturn at some point over the next 2 ½ years.
  • Any planet or chart point in Virgo or Taurus will be trine Saturn at some point over the next 2 ½ years.
  • Any planet or chart point in Scorpio or Pisces will be sextile Saturn at some point over the next 2½ years.

The Timing

OK, every astrologer has a different rule of thumb. Here is what I use:

  • I use orbs of no more than 2 degrees applying and separating- although I really don’t think that you don’t really feel an outer planet transit until it’s about 1 degree away. Saturn transits have long tails. In my experience, you feel the separation of the transit for an extra degree or so.
  • If the transiting planet applying to the aspect turns retrograde before it actually perfects the aspect, you feel the energy, but not the impact so much until it comes back direct. Eg Saturn turned retrograde in July 2009 at 26 Pisces 37’ less than a degree from my Moon at 27 Pisces 23’. I didn’t feel the impact of this conjunction until Saturn came back direct within a degree of my Moon.
  • I use whole signs only. Eg Even though my natal Saturn is at 0 Aries 58’ I won’t see this aspect as within orb of the square to my natal Saturn until Saturn actually moves into Capricorn.
  • If Saturn stations direct or retrograde on a planet or chart point take notice. Highlight it, put it in flashing lights or whatever. Just. Take. Notice.
  • Outer planets generally have 3 (sometimes more) hits on a planet. The 1st direct is an uncomfortable shock, the retrograde is about absorption of the lesson & the last can be the knife in the back that jolts you to take notice. You can read more about this here.

The Dates

  • Saturn moves into Capricorn on 19/20 December 2017- depending on your timezone
  • Saturn stations retrograde on 18 April 2018 at 9 Capricorn 9’
  • Saturn stations direct on 5 September 2018 at 2 Capricorn 33’
  • Saturn stations retrograde on 30 April 2019 at 20 Capricorn 31’
  • Saturn stations direct on 17 September 2019 at 13 Capricorn 55’
  • Saturn enters Aquarius on 23 March 2020
  • Saturn stations retrograde on 11 May 2020 at 1 Aquarius 58′
  • Saturn re-enters Capricorn on 2 July 2020
  • Saturn stations direct on 28 September 2020 at 25 Capricorn 20′
  • Saturn re-enters Aquarius on 18 December 2020

This is where it pays to know your chart.

There’s no point worrying now about Saturn conjunct your Capricorn Sun if your Sun is at 25 Capricorn – you have another couple of years before Saturn gets to that point.

The date range is below. If you need specific points within this range, refer to your ephemeris. Don’t know what an ephemeris is? Here’s a post that will help.

Keep an eye out for any planet or chart point that is at (to the degree) any of the stationing points above. These are important.
