Sense and Sensibility

Willoughby and Marianne
Willoughby and Marianne

Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove:

O no! it is an ever fixed mark

That looks on tempests and is never shaken

The least indulgent or flamboyant of the Venus transits, the most palatable of the Saturn transits, Venus trine Saturn is in play today.

This sonnet was used in Emma Thompson’s version of Sense and Sensibility. Willoughby (played by Greg Wise) and Marianne (Kate Winslet) are swapping Shakespeare sonnets- as you do when a supremely hot man has just rescued from a watery fall down a hill by throwing you on the back of his mighty steed.

Marianne falls hard for Willoughby, and seriously, who wouldn’t? Hot man sprouting Shakespeare, mighty steed – she didn’t stand a chance.

Willoughby breaks her heart- of course he would. Hot man sprouting Shakespeare, mighty steed- hell yeah, she’s going there anyway.

Willoughby will forever be Marianne’s Mr Big.

That, the scene I’ve just described? Hot man sprouting Shakespeare, mighty steed, romantic dream come true? That’s a Venus/Neptune connection.

Eventually Marianne grows to love Colonel Brandon.

Brandon is loyal, caring, steadfast and true.

Brandon’s steed is mighty too, but Brandon isn’t flamboyant. He isn’t demonstrative and, where Willoughby was romantic, Brandon is practical. Where Willoughby was fickle, Brandon simply keeps coming back.

Brandon and Marianne see each other clearly and objectively, each lives up to the others obligations, neither will make unreasonable demands on the other, and both have a strong sense of reality.

Marianne and Brandon are the sonnet, Marianne and Brandon are Venus trine Saturn. Somehow we know their love will survive.

Also at play is a trine between Saturn and Neptune and another between Venus and Neptune.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves another Grand Water Trine. Let’s break this down a little further.

Grand trines are about harmonious energy, the type of energy that comes easily. When water is involved, the key words we use are emotional security, intuition, nurturing and healing. Nice.

Venus trine Neptune brings compassion, tenderness and sensitivity. It’s unselfish, it’s spiritual and it’s creative. With Pisces and Cancer involved, it’ll be intuitive and empathetic. With Pisces involved it can also be day-dreamy and illusory- a la Marianne and Willoughby.

Neptune trine Saturn is a dissolution of boundaries and structures. Because it’s a trine, this will happen easily, because Scorpio is involved, there may be a letting go of something. Because Neptune and Saturn are involved, ideals and reality seem somehow to be in sync. For now.

While this aspect isn’t exact for another few days, it is in play now- and will be again in mid July.

With the three of these aspects in play, holding on too tightly to blame, excuses or outdated feelings will do you more harm than good. Acceptance of responsibility, emotions and obligations will do the opposite.

This is a time for thinking with your heart and going with what feels right. This is a time to trust your intuition. It’s also a time to look at love without the drama.
