Taking Care of Business…

shutterstock_73678858

I had an important business meeting in the city this morning…and I’d had a reasonably late night last night. Ok, perhaps I could have even had a smidgeon of a hangover too…just the tiniest smidgeon though…a last throw of partying while Venus was in Sagittarius perhaps?

But I digress.

A serious business meeting means serious business meeting hair, and serious business meeting clothes, and serious business meeting shoes and a serious business meeting face that shows nothing of the indulgences of the night before and the weekend before and the week before. A serious business meeting means keeping the mind firmly on the business at hand.

Venus in Capricorn to the rescue. And a little concealer…

Venus in Capricorn means business. She is serious about how she appears. She is serious about her reputation. She is serious about her relationships. She is also serious about material security. And before you all write to me, this doesn’t mean that she is mercenary- far from it- just that she takes a practical, possibly business like, attitude to love, life and pleasure.

She adorns herself in simple, quality, classic pieces. Her jewellery is under-stated and rarely over done. This is not a Venus that does bling. In the work place, she does professional like no other, whereas for casual wear she may opt for simple separates and natural fabrics. She is sexy in a very natural, yet quite powerful way.

She will rarely make the first move and will instead wait until she is sure that her feelings are reciprocated so as not to appear to be embarrassed. When she does commit within a relationship, it is only when she knows herself to be serious about you and vice versa. Caution is important to her.

This Venus is resourceful. She knows where to focus her energies for the best return. She knows about where to get the biggest bang for her buck, the best return on her dollar. She knows all about boundaries and self control. She knows when to stop, when to hold back and when she has had enough. This Venus does not over indulge her appetites.

Yet, like all Earth signs, she is sensual rather than sexual, tactile rather than social, contained rather than demonstrative, faithful rather than verbally expressive. If she loves you, she will show you more than she tells you- in the things that she does, in the help that she gives you, in solid grounded useful ways.

All Earth signs need a solid love, the type that will stand the test of time. She doesn’t need the dramas, fantasy, romance or passions of other Venus signs, but, like her fellow Earth signs, she does like sex in all its earthy, raw energy.

Venus in Capricorn understands that it is as easy to love someone with money as it is to love someone without. Stephen Arroyo in Relationships & Life Cycles says it best when he remarks that “many of them stay married for money if they’re in a bad marriage and there would be financial uncertainty if they broke up; they’ll often stick it out for 30 or 40 years of hell just for that material security.” Venus in Capricorn may put duty and security above personal happiness- although she may justify it for other means. Again, don’t write to me- he said it!

And, let’s be honest, Venus in Capricorn is not the only sign who will hang onto a relationship well past the best before date for reasons other than happiness.

Naturally this all applies to men with Venus in Capricorn as well. As we know, the position of Venus in a man’s chart often shows what he looks for in a woman. In this case, he wants someone with Capricorn characteristics. She may be businesslike, she may be able to assist him in some practical way, she may be older than him, she may be able to help him climb the corporate ladder. She will dress conservatively, or at least appropriately. She will be well maintained, but not necessarily high maintenance. She may have Venus in her chart aspecting Saturn.

If you are a Capricorn woman, have Venus in the 10th house or Venus aspected by Saturn, you may well see similar traits in your own relationships. You may be more cautious with affection, and be drawn to those with whom you can share a mutual responsibility or effort. When you do love, it will be with loyalty, solidity & commitment…and a lifetime guarantee.

As always, consider also where your Sun is. Eg with the Sun in Aquarius, Venus in Capricorn will have a quirky edge.

Consider also what other planets your Venus aspects as these will influence just how strongly you identify with the above.

How NOT to survive Venus Retrograde…

Venus Retrograde

Last week I gave you a survival guide for Venus’s retrograde period.

I know, though, that some of you will want war stories, so in the interest of helping you along with that, here’s a guide to how NOT to survive the Venus retrograde with your heart and credit rating intact.

  • It’s the New Year sales, so buy up big. Those no interest deals, no payments until deals are great…
  • As for credit cards- go on, get another. You know you really want it. Besides, that bonus is due to come through, and there should be a birthday cheque in the mail from Aunty Mabel sometime soon.
  • Don’t put any money aside to allow for increased payments
  • Not being able to afford it doesn’t matter so much when it’s on sale.
  • Not needing it doesn’t matter so much when it’s on sale.
  • Don’t budget for the year ahead. It’s an over-rated activity.
  • You need that extra cupcake…
  • Sign on the dotted line without reading the fine print- after all, who has time to read that stuff?
  • Say yes to everything without thinking about it. Give up your only day off to do something you don’t want to do? Yes! Blow a fortune at a restaurant with people you don’t want to be with? Yes! Go out with that guy who has a reputation for emotional abuse, but bought you flowers so must be just misunderstood? Yes!
  • Say yes to the dress…the one that’s two sizes too small, a colour you don’t normally wear, but will look great when you drop that weight and change your hair. After all, it’s 50% off and designer…
  • Say yes to the shoes- you need another pair of black peep toes. At this price, it doesn’t matter if they pinch a bit- surely the leather will give…
  • Fall hard for someone already attached. He really means it when he says he’ll leave his wife.
  • Pash the boss at the Christmas party. Afterwards, treat it as if he’s the love of your life and you two are meant to be together forever.
  • Get that tattoo, change your hair radically, book in for a nose job, launch a completely new look. Now.
  • Run off to a Registry Office with the guy/girl you met last night. It’s meant to be.
  • Make a “this time it’s final” decision on the relationship you’ve been in for years. We are never ever getting back together. Like ever.

It goes without saying that this post is designed to be tongue in cheek. Banks really do need to be repaid, mistakes really do have consequences, that dress will never fit, and shoes that are tight to begin with will cut your feet in half. It stands to reason that if you can’t afford it now, you probably won’t be able to afford it when the payment is due.

My advice? If possible, don’t do any of the above! Use your re words, slow down, take a step back, and rethink before you act. You still might choose to go ahead, but be aware that the choice is yours- it’s not Venus Retrograde making you do it…

Keep an eye out too on any other longer lasting transits that are happening in the background.

I made some (in hindsight) stupid choices last time Venus was retrograde in Capricorn. A shirt that I paid a fortune for, that I’ve never worn and a gorgeous pair of Marc Jacobs shoes half a size too small were the least of that damage.

In the background, Uranus was exactly conjunct natal Mercury, and Pluto was at 24 Sag, square Chiron and exactly on the midpoint between squaring my Sun (20 Pisces) and my Moon (27 Pisces). Big Things were brewing. In hindsight (it’s a truly wonderful thing) the dumb things from that period were an integral part of my bigger story.

And a very large part of that bigger story was about self worth. Not that you have the benefit of hindsight and perspective when you’re in the middle of something like this…

I don’t expect the events to be the same as back in Dec 2005, January 2006…that’s not to say that the themes won’t be similar. I suspect that they will be. This time though, with Uranus pushing his way out of my first house, the questions regarding worth will likely relate to what I’ve learned about mine, the worth of what I do, and where I’m selling myself short.

Why not use this time to review your worth? Where aren’t you seeing your true value? Are there others in your life who don’t value you? Perhaps a little renegotiation is required…

I’ll leave you with that…

Something I need…

Venus in Capricorn

Venus/Saturn aspects

Venus is about to move into Capricorn where she will stay for much longer than her usual month or so. In fact, she’ll be here until March 2014.

Venus is never more than two signs away from the Sun, so for her to be all the way out here in Capricorn, with the Sun back in Scorpio, it can only mean one thing- she’s slowing down and preparing to turn retrograde. We’re still a way from this happening, and obviously I’ll pop something up about Venus retrograde closer to the time, but for now be aware that it’s coming up.

I’ve written about Venus in Capricorn before- so, given the efficiency of Earth signs, I’ll just pop the link in here, so you can duck over if you’re interested.

Instead I thought I’d use this space to talk about Saturn and Venus- appropriate given that Venus is in a Saturn ruled sign.

I hear a lot from people who have Venus either conjunct or in difficult aspect to Saturn- ie the square or opposition. I also hear a lot from people who have Saturn in the 7th house. What each of these has in common is a belief that it is this aspect of placement that is causing them to have difficulty being in and staying in relationship.

I know of many people in good, loving relationships with this aspect, but sadly, I don’t hear from them often enough in this forum.

It’s the same as my 7th house Uranus, it’s opposition to my Sun and Moon, and it’s inconjunct to Venus- the most common questions I’m asked by fellow astrologers is:

  • I suppose you’ve never married, or
  • how many times have you been married?

Like the textbooks say, I have issues with commitment. I’ve been able to incorporate those Uranian tendencies, somehow, into long term relationship.

The thing with astrology is there is black and white, and shades of grey- and so many possibilities in between…and exceptions to every rule. Largely though, those exceptions are because the person making the exception, has somehow managed to work the aspects to their own advantage- usually because there is something else happening in the chart that helps reconcile this aspect. My point is, you may be the exception- you may be the rule, you may be somewhere in between.

So, here’s the deal.

Saturn-Venus aspects are difficult. Saturn is cold and dry in nature- binding and aging. Venus is warm and moist- soft and relaxing. Venus wants to feel good, Saturn wants to feel responsible and safe- very often these motivations clash. Venus can be (ahem) lazy, and Saturn is not. Saturn can also (ahem) be afraid.

When you have Venus in aspect to Saturn, relationships can be difficult- but not impossible. Essentially, in order to express affection and love freely, you must feel secure and stable.

This means that you take love and relationships seriously- or you tend towards relationships with people who have these characteristics. What makes you feel good* is shared effort, commitment and joint responsibilities. With the trine and the sextile, the flow of this energy is relatively easy…with the square and opposition it’s not.

The thing is, the first part of falling in love is the 5th house stuff- the fun, the taking a risk, the play. If you have Venus conjunct, square or in opposition to Saturn, it’s tough for you to enjoy this part. You don’t want to take a leap unless there is a guarantee of some description- and love rarely comes with a guarantee…

Sometimes with this aspect, you fight against that which makes you feel comfortable. You crave a mature relationship, yet, especially with the square and opposition, you find yourself drawn to those who can’t provide you with that. It’s a little like craving bread when you know the yeast will blow your tummy up.

It might be that you continually date partners who are unable or unwilling to commit. Perhaps they are too young or committed elsewhere. It could be that you are the one who is delaying commitment, waiting for the right time, or the right signals. Perhaps fear of the unknown, or failure, or a broken heart, or what someone else might think is preventing you from taking that step.

The good news is, you can overcome it. That will, however, require risk and a little more faith than Saturn is usually comfortable with. Look for help from any planet sextile or trine either Venus or Saturn.

Being successful in relationships will require you knowing yourself, and what you need from a partner. It requires honesty and reality. It also means looking at expectations with a mature eye. Wherever Saturn is, is where you feel that you’re not good enough- and this matters because it’s a part of life that, well, matters. Resolve this and you’re halfway there. Sound easy? Of course it isn’t.

Having these aspects, or Saturn in the 7th, might mean that you commence a relationship with an older person, or someone with Capricornian tendencies such as maturity, responsibility and ambition, but it can also mean something as simple as you confronting your attitudes to what relationship is and making sure that they are real. Only you can answer that.

I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what’s best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes

I want a girl with the right allocations
Who’s fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She’s playing with her jewellery
She’s putting up her hair
She’s touring the facility
And picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket……

If she loves you, she will show you more than she tells you- in the things that she does, in the help that she gives you, in solid grounded useful ways.

And, let’s be honest, Venus in Capricorn is not the only sign who will hang onto a relationship well past the best before date for reasons other than happiness. Other examples- Cancer will hang on because of shared history & children, Pisces will stay usually because she feels empathy, sorrow or is stuck in a victim mentality, whilst Scorpio will hang on because, well, possession is all important.

Naturally this all applies to men with Venus in Capricorn as well. As we know, the position of Venus in a mans’ chart often shows what he looks for in a woman. I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass

She is fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She’s touring the facility
And picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt and a long…. long jacket

I want a girl with a smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At Citibank we will meet accidentally
We’ll start to talk when she borrows my pen

She wants a car with a cupholder arm rest
She wants a car that will get her there
She’s changing her name from Kitty to Karen
She’s trading her MG for a white Chrysler La Baron

I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket
