The week ahead…

I’ve got a few other posts planned for this week, so given that there’s not a huge amount happening up there – other than a New Moon in Taurus on Wednesday – I figured we’d cover it all in one go.

To start the week off with intention we have a Mercury – Saturn trine. Trines are easy flow of energy, Mercury is about communication and thought and all of that, and Saturn is, as we know, serious and hard-working. Put it together and you have a day that’s good for both planning and for swatting away the excuses and getting onto whatever it is that you’ve been putting off getting onto.

On Wednesday there’s a New Moon in Taurus – at 6 Taurus 27’ to be exactish. I’ll pop something up about that, but for now pull out your chart and check out what part of life this falls in for you.

Fast forward to the weekend and Venus moves back into Aries on Friday. She’s fully direct now and ready for action. If you need a reminder about what Venus in Aries means, check out this post.

Finally, we have a repeat of an aspect from a few weeks ago – Mercury conjunct Uranus.

This is what I said last time:

Thoughts could be coming at you faster than you can capture them all today. It’s impossible to capture them all and almost as difficult to avoid jumping to conclusions. Don’t worry too much about this and instead enjoy the stimulation of free thinking. It’s probably also best to resist the urge to act without thinking.

This time around, Mercury is retrograde, but there’ll be another chance to pick up on this one when Mercury is direct again – on May 10.

If you want to know what else I’ve been up to, there’s my usual weekly round-up post over on and anyways. You’ll also find some posts about my recent travels through Vietnam – and, in the spirit of the Sun in Taurus, a recipe for brookies. What’s a brookie, I hear you ask? It’s a combination between a brownie and a cookie. You’re welcome.

Venus Retrograde

Venus will soon be retrograde.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the planet is moving backwards, just that it appears to be doing so from our perspective.

My Aries hairdresser asked me about it the other day:

‘My stars in the magazine said that I shouldn’t change my appearance drastically in March. Does that mean that I can’t have a haircut?’

‘It depends on whether we’re talking a maintenance haircut or a Helen cut everything off and dye it a million new colours haircut.’

‘Well, I was thinking of something like that.’

‘Yeah, nah…probably not a good idea.’

In case you have a similar set of questions, I posted this survival guide earlier in the year.

If you want to know where it’s happening in your chart, you’ll find those details in this post.

Venus in Aries: Woman On A Mission

Venus moves into Aries today – in fact she’d already have been there a few hours as this goes to press. Because she goes retrograde this year (I told you all about that here) the stay in Aries is an extended one – about 4 months all up.

She’ll retreat back into Pisces for about 6 weeks (as you do) around March 4th before heading back into Aries on April 29th. She won’t be finished in Aries until the first week in June – around the 6th/ 7th (depending where in the world you are).

Aries isn’t a place that Venus feels terribly comfortable in. Venus, you see, likes to attract and be pleased, and in Aries she goes after what she wants and knows how to please herself. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that – I have Venus in Aries and it’s one of the favourite planet placements in my chart – it’s just that this is a different mode of behavior for Venus.

If you want to know a bit more about this placement, or there’s an Aries woman in your life you’d like to try and understand better, check out this post.

Doing it for yourself…

We all have Aries somewhere in our chart, and it’s this part of life that Venus will be bestowing her presence on. It’s this part of life that you’ll find pleasure and expansion in. It’s this area of life that you might want to take the initiative and actively go after what you want, rather than waiting for it to come to you. All the fire signs are creative and stimulating, so look for that influence in whatever part of life Venus is moving through for you.

In my chart, Venus will begin her transit of Aries in the 1st house, and finish it in the 2nd. When Venus crosses your Ascendant, it’s a great time to take a good look at, well, your look. Given the retrograde, though, don’t make any changes that are so drastic they can’t be undone until after Venus goes direct again. I’ve been toying with getting a small tattoo on my wrist for years – a lotus. I also want a rambling rose on my foot. I’d decided it could be my 50th birthday present to myself, but, given the retrograde, I’ll hold off on that until after Venus is direct.

If you don’t have your chart, read this post on how to get one.

If you don’t know what the houses mean, check out series 1 of the Toolbox or this post.

If you don’t have any idea about your birth time, or can’t be faffed working it out, you can follow the solar guide:

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aries, Venus will be transiting your 1st house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus, Venus will be transiting your 12th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Gemini, Venus will be transiting your 11th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Cancer, Venus will be transiting your 10th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Leo, Venus will be transiting your 9th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Virgo, Venus will be transiting your 8th house.
  • If your Sun of Ascendant is in Libra, Venus will be transiting your 7th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Scorpio, Venus will be transiting your 6th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Sagittarius, Venus will be transiting your 5th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Capricorn, Venus will be transiting your 4th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aquarius, Venus will be transiting your 3rd house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces, Venus will be transiting your 2nd house.

Something about bad singing, women who know what they want, and getting stuff done…

cute dog Singing a song

Miss T has most unkindly, and not entirely unfairly, compared my singing to cat wails, or Kali howling. As I said, unkind. I happen to think that I smash some of those Adele high notes out of the park. She says I smash them in other ways. We’ve agreed to disagree. I also think that sometimes Adele doesn’t sing the right words, but that’s another story.

Where am I going with this? To Mercury in Taurus, of course. You see, people with Mercury in Venus ruled signs tend to have nicer sounding voices- all other things being equal, of course. Anyways, Mercury moves into Taurus today. If you want to know more about this, you’ll find a previous post here.

Oh, in case you’re interested, although Adele does have the Sun in Taurus (conjunct Jupiter) she has Mercury and Venus in Gemini. Whatevs.

Also today Venus moves into Aries. Aries isn’t a place that Venus feels terribly comfortable in. Venus, you see, likes to attract and be pleased, and in Aries she goes after what she wants and knows how to please herself. I have Venus in Aries, but if you want to know a bit more about this placement, or there’s and Aries woman in your life you’d like to try and understand better, check out this post.

Todays’ main aspect, though, is a trine between the Sun and Saturn. Whenever we talk about Saturn, we talk about work, discipline, control….well, I do, anyway.

When we talk about the Sun, it’s about ego, the self, vitality, energy…words like that.

Trines are easy energy flows, as in the energy flows easily- not that it’s an easy day, or….oh, never mind, you know what I mean.

Put it all together, and this is a good day to harness your energy and put it to good use to get stuff done.

There, that wasn’t so hard, was it?

Something About When Wonder Woman Hooked Up With Superman…

no idea who I should be crediting this one to...
credit in the fine print…

Venus and Mars are currently together in the Mars ruled fire sign of Aries.

What does this mean?

At it’s most basic it means that what you want and the energy you’re prepared to put in to get it are aligned. That has to be a good thing….right?

It depends…doesn’t it always?

Mars and Venus are the archetypal male and female energies, so whenever they meet up, there is a passionate, sexual energy to it. Hold that thought.

Any planet in Aries has their behaviour altered by Aries. It’s how they operate for that period of time.

In Mars ruled Aries, Venus behaves in a way that is not comfortable for her. She’s impulsive, she’s competitive, she’s determined, she’s challenging and she’s not at all passive. She’s an Amazon…she’s Wonder Woman…she’s Xena…and she’s prepared to do what it takes to get what she wants.

She’s not a princess- that’s not a bad thing, but she isn’t the typical feminine archetype. She’s something very different and completely wonderful.

Mars in Aries is, however, the quintessential male archetype. He’s also extremely wilful and headstrong.

So when the two come together in Aries, sparks will fly in a mighty, mighty way.

There’s also likely to be competition.

Competition, when healthy is not a bad thing. However, if you find yourself butting heads for the sake of butting heads or the sake of having the last word, it might be time to take a step back and look for a position of cooperation or compromise. Check that you’re fighting a battle that’s worth fighting, rather than fighting for the sake of fighting…or for the sake of making up. I’ll leave that one with you. Be clear, I’m talking about the clashing of two independent wills here.

The other thing about Aries is the ego.

The Sun is exalted in Aries, so ego is an especially big deal. And one of the best ways to satisfy our ego is through relationship with another.

Here’s the thing, these stars are great for starting something new, for having some fun, but, unless there is something else happening of a significant nature in your chart, a Venus/Mars conjunction will not usually be enough to signify a game changing relationship. This is especially the case in Aries, where things are done and decisions are made on impulse. If you’re starting something new with someone new under this transit, bear that in mind.

Another way in which we express ourselves is through creativity- and we are all creative in some way. Whether you express yourself through words, pictures, art, photography, dance, music, cooking or doing something for others, it’s still self expression…and self expression is creative.

Above all, in Aries, don’t over think it. Aries energy is enthusiastic and vital so you know what? JFDI- Just Flipping Do It!

Woman on a Mission…

brave_2

I have Venus in Aries, so this post every year is always one that I love writing- partly because of that Aries energy and partly because it means that my Venus Return (and at least one reasonably decent hair day) is just around the corner.

Venus doesn’t particularly like being in Aries. Technically, she’s said to be in the sign of her detriment- in the opposite sign to the sign she rules. This doesn’t mean that it’s bad- just that it’s different.

You see, Venus is all about the things (and people) that make us feel good, and how we attract or charm those things (and people) into our lives.

The thing is, in Aries, her charm is more direct than subtle, and rather than attracting, she’s more likely to hunt it down herself. And if she doesn’t get it? Think of toddlers in shopping aisles across the country. This makes sense- Aries is ruled by Mars, the God of War, so Venus in Aries is heavily influenced by Mars.

In Pisces Venus is able to get what she wants in a Pisces way- often through the manipulation of others, sometimes through playing the victim. In Pisces she can be the damsel in distress waiting to be rescued. In Pisces, Venus is ultra feminine.

In Aries, if she wants something she just straps on her boots and her attitude and marches right on in to get it…for herself. In Aries she can look after herself. In Aries, Venus doesn’t need a hero to save her- she is quite capable of being her own hero.

In Aries she likes a challenge- whether that be a physical challenge or the type of challenge that has my Aries Miss working out just how she can beat her Scorpio father in whatever their latest battle of wills happens to be.

How to make Ms Aries want something more? Withhold it, make her work for it, keep it just a little bit out of reach- delay her gratification. How to piss her off? Do the same.

She’ll stamp her feet (sometimes figuratively speaking, sometimes not) hers until you listen/it gets taken away/her attention is diverted. And diversion is actually the best tactic to use. In fact, when dealing with Venus in Aries/ Aries woman in a tantrum, just think about how you would deal with your 3 year old- the two can be very similar.

Venus represents the feminine, and in Aries, Venus is a different sort of feminine- a wilful, direct, independent sort of feminine… If you’re a woman with Venus in Aries, that could be where the problems start.

Essentially we’re not made the way little girls are supposed to be made of- even if she’s as heavily Pisces influenced as I am, there is no sugar and spice anywhere to be seen.

We’re not supposed to go hard after what we want- we’re supposed to charm it into life.

We’re not supposed to be selfish, we’re not supposed to argue back, we’re not supposed to do many of the things we do.

We show our affection vigorously, directly and assertively. We can DIY for ourselves, and we don’t need someone else to do it for us.

We don’t compromise if compromising is unfair. We don’t keep the peace for the sake of it. We don’t blame our weakness, but survive on our strength.

We don’t sit around and wait for things to change- we go out and make it change. We take charge.

If you’re a woman with Venus in Aries, it can be tough reconciling all of this with the concept of how you should be acting, dressing, and reacting. If we let it, it can mess with our idea of who we are, of who we need to be, of what our identity, our feminine identity is.

Venus in Aries needs to move, needs to feel strong and needs to have something to chase after in order to feel good. Not to be too simplistic or tongue in cheek about it, but if you’re overweight and you have Venus in Aries, chances are that you’re also feeling weak, compromised, and without creative purpose. You might also be feeling strongly that your identity and purpose is secondary to that of someone else- that you’re not being seen or heard.

The solution? Nothing’s ever simple. Naturally you need to move, but more importantly, you need a mission, a challenge- preferably one that is visionary or creative.

Of course you also need to consider how your Sun and Moon are being satisfied- amongst other things- but you get the idea.

As for love- if you have Venus in Aries you love quickly, impulsively, competitively & independently. If you have ever woken in the middle of the night with the sudden urge to sing a Partridge Family song, odds are you have Venus in Aries.

The Aries Venus woman is drawn to a Mars type man. Whilst she can look after herself perfectly well, she doesn’t want a man who needs looking after. She wants a hero, even though she doesn’t need one. She wants someone she can battle with and have great make up sex with later, someone who knows what he wants, someone who doesn’t make it too easy for her.

What does this mean? He might have his Sun, Moon, Venus or Mars in Aries, a packed 1st house or maybe Sun conjunct Mars. And trust me, if he has even a combination of these factors, he will sweep you off your feet! And, like the song says, you will feel his approach like a fire in your blood. Oh, be still my beating heart…

The biggest issue with loving when you have Venus in Aries, is sustaining the excitement and interest past bin night. Aries likes things to be new and fresh, and business as usual very often doesn’t fit into that.

How to keep Venus in Aries? The trick is to leave her alone before she knows she needs to be left alone, don’t give in to her, don’t avoid conflict, and don’t expect her to fit into any traditional idea of how the perfect woman should be, dress and behave. She is her own woman, and very likely she’s on her own mission.

The man with Venus in Aries is most likely going to be attracted to a partner with Arian qualities- someone who is a little impulsive, perhaps headstrong and absolutely independently minded. She will be someone who can look after herself. She will be his hero…and probably have at least one set of red lingerie.

Sound like you? If you have Venus in Aries, are a woman with the Sun in Aries, Venus in the 1st house and even Venus conjunct Mars- actually probably Venus square or opposite to Mars would also do the trick.

If you have Venus in Aries and are having problems expressing yourself, check out what other planets are aspecting Venus- especially Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Even the “easy” aspects by these guys will alter your ability to tap into your Venus.

The title song? You can listen to it here

Something about the big picture…

So there I was thinking a little more about Venus in Scorpio…

You see, there was one thing I forgot to mention about Venus- how she goes about attracting what she wants.

And that is the biggest point of differentiation between Venus and Mars. Mars goes after what he wants, and Venus attracts it.

There’s no coincidence that Venus is uncomfortable in the Mars ruled signs of Aries and Scorpio. In Aries she is assertive, and in Scorpio, mesmerising.

Anyways, just wanted to get that out.

To the skies…

Not really a huge lot to report today.

The Moon is in Sagittarius and, aside from an early Grand Fire Trine with Uranus and Mars, La Luna is sailing quite freely towards the horizon….which is where your focus should be concentrated.

Today is not the day for focusing on details. Instead, take a step back, or two, enough to see the whole picture. Then take a deep breath and look at it again.

Sometimes just doing this gives you more faith in the future, in possibilities- it allows you to believe that there’ll be a yes when all you’ve been focusing on are the no’s.

Go on. Try it.

Venus and Mars are currently together in the Mars ruled fire sign of Aries. While the conjunction won’t be exact for 24 hours, they are at the same degree now and the energy will be with us for the next few days.
