Aries New Moon

If you google it, you’ll find a heap of statistics that are out there telling us how many people break their New Year Resolutions.

You’ll find even more that want to estimate how many people fail to honour them… same thing really? Either way the number is estimated at anything between 60-88%, depending on the source you read. Even though I have this theory that 94.5% of all statistics are made up, I tend to believe that these numbers are pretty close to the mark. But Astrology, or more specifically the New Moon in Aries, is here to give you another shot at it.

Whether yours is to lose weight, quit smoking, reduce debt, cut back on other nasties or accelerate your 5 year plan with a 2 year deadline, the chances are that sitting here now in April, things have fallen off the tracks.

Just when is the right time to utter those fateful words “This year I will….” remains up for conjecture.  Should you do it before during or after the New Years Eve party? Should you say it exactly on the 1st, last or whatever stroke of midnight? Should you take your time to think about your goal (and for the after effects of the NYE party to wear off) and make your resolution for the 1st New Moon of the year- in Capricorn? Should you wait still further until Chinese New Year, or even the astrological New Year when the Sun moves into Aries at the end of March?

History, it seems, agrees that the best time to make a New Year Resolution is in the northern Spring. I read a column by a Dr Rick Miller (from a University of Nebraska Kearney online publication) who wrote that the earliest recording of New Year Resolutions was by the Babylonians 4000 years ago.

It seems, however, that the most common goal of the ancient Babylonians was not to shed 20 kgs or be nice to that girl/guy in the next partition- it was….wait for it… to return borrowed farm equipment.

There’s a lot to be said for the theory that the best time to make a New Year Resolution is actually now… well in the next couple of days with the New Moon in Aries- the 1st New Moon of the astrological year.

During the Balsamic phase we get rid of everything we no longer need, perform whatever banishing rituals we need to perform and wipe the slate clean. At the New Moon, we start the cycle again.

The New Moon energy is always one of new beginnings. And nothing says new beginnings better than an Aries New Moon.

A New Moon, especially an Aries New Moon turns the sky into a great big empty blackboard that you can write your intentions on… I love that. And there is nothing quite as new as an Aries New Moon.

The Aries energy is one of new, almost childlike enthusiasm to explore, to be the first, to start something brilliant. First things can never be repeated- that’s what makes them so great. You can’t share a first kiss twice, or go somewhere for the first time again or get on a plane for the first time twice…well, you get the idea.

First things and first times are also scary. The whole point of them is that you don’t know what to expect, what will happen, how it will work out. It requires you to take those first few steps into the dark with just your enthusiasm to guide you.

So, for those of you with next doors lawnmower, shovel, trailer or whipper snipper that you borrowed aeons ago from your best mate (and you know who you are…), make like the Babylonians and include in your First New Moon of the Astrological Year a resolution to give it back…and then grab what is on offer with both hands- without that whipper snipper in the back shed, you will have plenty of room.

DIY it?

If you’ve been reading along, you should know how to find where the New Moon is happening in your chart. If you’re new to this site (welcome), duck across and check out this post before you go any further.

The position you’re looking for is 7 Aries 37’…or thereabouts.

Now, let’s set our intentions. Think about the area of life you’re focusing on and set small achievable targets. Make sure that you do at least one thing towards this goal this month. If you’re unsure where to start, check out this post.

  • How do the concerns of this house make you feel?
  • How would you like to feel about them?
  • What positive steps can you take over the next four weeks to minimise the gap between how you feel about this are and how you’d like to feel?

*****Write it down!!!!!!!!!!******

If you don’t have any idea about your birth time, or can’t be faffed working it out, you can follow the solar guide:

Happy Birthday Aries…

Like mothers, us astrologers are supposed to love all signs equally and not have favourites. Deep down, though, most of us admit to a teeny preference here or there – maybe because it’s the sign of the people we love the most in our lives.

Often, though, it’s the sign that our Venus is in. Why? Because Venus shows us where we find pleasure and how we relate, so it makes sense that we’re drawn to those who display the characteristics of that sign. Therefore, it makes sense that I have an extra big soft spot for Aries – it’s the sign my Venus is in and it’s also the sign my daughter, brother and BMF were born under. Well, that’s my excuse anyway.

Now, before you all accuse me of complete bias, yes, Aries, like all signs, has its shadow- anyone who has an Aries ex will be able to fill a page on his (or her) insensitivity, tantrums, lack of guilt or remorse, selfishness, enough about you lets talk about me attitude.

Anyways, if you want to know more about Aries, or about what motivates the Aries in your life, here’s a link to something I prepared earlier.

Doing it for yourself…

Everyone has Aries somewhere in their chart. It’s this part of life that you’ll approach with an Aries go- for- it, how hard could it possibly be? attitude. It’s also this part of life that the Sun is shining on for the next month. It’s this part of life that you need to take the initiative in.

Aries is 2nd house for me, and our furniture is being packed up and relocated in a couple of days. Quite literally my 2nd house possessions will be moved!

If you don’t have your chart, read this post on how to get one.

If you don’t know what the houses mean, check out series 1 of the Toolbox or this post.

If you don’t have any idea about your birth time, or can’t be faffed working it out, you can follow the solar guide. Naturally, if you do know where Pisces falls in your chart, you won’t need this guide.

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aries, the Sun will be transiting your 1st house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus, the Sun will be transiting your 12th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Gemini, the Sun will be transiting your 11th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Cancer, the Sun will be transiting your 10th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Leo, the Sun will be transiting your 9th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Virgo, the Sun will be transiting your 8th house.
  • If your Sun of Ascendant is in Libra, the Sun will be transiting your 7th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Scorpio, the Sun will be transiting your 6th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Sagittarius, the Sun will be transiting your 5th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Capricorn, the Sun will be transiting your 4th house.

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces, the Sun will be transiting your 2nd house.

Venus in Aries: Woman On A Mission

Venus moves into Aries today – in fact she’d already have been there a few hours as this goes to press. Because she goes retrograde this year (I told you all about that here) the stay in Aries is an extended one – about 4 months all up.

She’ll retreat back into Pisces for about 6 weeks (as you do) around March 4th before heading back into Aries on April 29th. She won’t be finished in Aries until the first week in June – around the 6th/ 7th (depending where in the world you are).

Aries isn’t a place that Venus feels terribly comfortable in. Venus, you see, likes to attract and be pleased, and in Aries she goes after what she wants and knows how to please herself. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that – I have Venus in Aries and it’s one of the favourite planet placements in my chart – it’s just that this is a different mode of behavior for Venus.

If you want to know a bit more about this placement, or there’s an Aries woman in your life you’d like to try and understand better, check out this post.

Doing it for yourself…

We all have Aries somewhere in our chart, and it’s this part of life that Venus will be bestowing her presence on. It’s this part of life that you’ll find pleasure and expansion in. It’s this area of life that you might want to take the initiative and actively go after what you want, rather than waiting for it to come to you. All the fire signs are creative and stimulating, so look for that influence in whatever part of life Venus is moving through for you.

In my chart, Venus will begin her transit of Aries in the 1st house, and finish it in the 2nd. When Venus crosses your Ascendant, it’s a great time to take a good look at, well, your look. Given the retrograde, though, don’t make any changes that are so drastic they can’t be undone until after Venus goes direct again. I’ve been toying with getting a small tattoo on my wrist for years – a lotus. I also want a rambling rose on my foot. I’d decided it could be my 50th birthday present to myself, but, given the retrograde, I’ll hold off on that until after Venus is direct.

If you don’t have your chart, read this post on how to get one.

If you don’t know what the houses mean, check out series 1 of the Toolbox or this post.

Mars In Aries: It’s Getting Hot In Here

Mars in Aries…oh be still my beating heart!

Is it just me or is it getting hot in here?

Mars rules Aries, so is at his strongest, most physical, most vital, most impulsive, most headstrong, most independent here.

Mars is a hot and masculine planet and Aries a hot, cardinal, and masculine sign, so this is arguably the most masculine and direct of energy forces. It burns hot indeed. Sure, this can mean bulging biceps and all of that rather obvious, clichéd, and a little bit yummy masculinity (if you like that sort of thing, of course), but it isn’t just about the physical. It’s about how that energy is directed – and in Aries, energy is activated in clear lines outwardly. I know a few Aries men who don’t at all fit the clichéd image of Aries – not physically anyway… but, man, their energy is pure irrepressible Aries – and that’s what we’re talking about here.

Anyways, of you want to know more, I’ve written (a lot) more about Mars in Aries here. Don’t forget, what I describe is the energy in its purest form – the impact of other planets will affect that. e.g. my daughter has the Sun, Mars, Mercury and Saturn in Aries. While she is serious Aries energy, the influence of Saturn gives that energy a slower, more measured burn. Just saying.

Doing it for yourself…

We all have Aries somewhere in our chart, and it’s this part of life that’s about to get an energy hit from Mars.I joke with one Aries guy I know, that it’s like he’s a kid on red cordial having a permanent sugar rush. Totally exhausting, yet at the same time, inspiring. It’s that energy that you want to harness in whatever part of life it is that Mars is moving through for you.

Pull your chart out and look for the symbol of Aries. It’s like a ram’s horns.

If you don’t have your chart, read this post on how to get one.

If you don’t know what the houses mean, check out series 1 of the Toolbox or this post.

If you don’t have any idea about your birth time, or can’t be faffed working it out, you can follow the solar guide below.

Mars for me will transit from the 1st to the 2nd house. Mars in Aries is providing me with the energy to take some direct action on myself and my money – to actively pursue what I want in those areas of life..

Over to you…

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aries, Mars will be transiting your 1st house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus, Mars will be transiting your 12th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Gemini, Mars will be transiting your 11th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Cancer, Mars will be transiting your 10th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Leo, Mars will be transiting your 9th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Virgo, Mars will be transiting your 8th house.
  • If your Sun of Ascendant is in Libra, Mars will be transiting your 7th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Scorpio, Mars will be transiting your 6th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Sagittarius, Mars will be transiting your 5th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Capricorn, Mars will be transiting your 4th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aquarius, Mars will be transiting your 3rd house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces, Mars will be transiting your 2nd house.

Mars will be in Aries from 28 January to 10 March, 2017.

Mercury in Aries: I Like It Loud

Young man in casual screaming in megaphone

Mercury moves out of Pisces where he hasn’t exactly been complaining, but rather trudging along with a soulful no-one understands me look on his face. I’m not sure about you, but things have been happening when Mercury has been in Pisces, without too much in the line of actual action occurring to do much about whatever it is that’s been happening.

With Mercury moving into Mars ruled Aries, I suspect that this will be changing!

Anyways, I’m still in deadline hell, so here’s a link to a previous Mercury in Aries post…

It’s Pandemonium: Happy Birthday Aries….

Zodiac Aries golden sign

Ruler: Mars

Exalted: Sun

Detriment: Venus

Fall: Saturn

Polarity: Masculine/ Positive

Modality: Cardinal

Element: Fire

Body Parts: head, adrenal glands, blood (as the vitaliser and energizer)

Nature: hot, dry, inflammatory

Aries represents activation and direct, thrusting, forward motion….yep, sounds a tad phallic.

Like mothers, us astrologers are supposed to love all signs equally and not have favourites. Deep down, though, most of us admit to a teeny preference here or there- maybe because it’s the sign of the people we love the most in our lives.

Often, though, it’s the sign that our Venus is in. Why? Because Venus shows us where we find pleasure and how we relate, so it makes sense that we’re drawn to those who display the characteristics of that sign. Therefore, it makes sense that I have an extra big soft spot for Aries- it’s the sign my Venus is in and it’s also the sign my daughter, brother and BMF were born under. Well, that’s my excuse anyway.

I asked my daughter (Sun, Mars, Mercury and Saturn in Aries) what she likes most about being an Aries. Her reply? She said she likes that she knows that if she stops she gets tired, but that if she exercises she thinks better.

I would have asked my BMF (ASC, Sun, Mars in Aries) what he thinks about being an Aries, except he was having one of those weeks when he was whirling around in a million different directions, with me being caught in his slipstream.

I would have asked my baby brother (ASC, Sun, Mercury in Aries) what he thought, except that he’d gone exploring in the Victorian High Country with his swag and his camping accessories. He has the Moon in Pisces and needs his occasional escapes.

Anyways, for everyone else, without any additional fuss or sentimentality, let me introduce to you Aries…

Aries is the warrior

Whether it’s a boardroom, a battlefield, a sporting event, a cause, an argument, a business, a damsel in distress, Aries will charge in and try and save the day. he also knows when it’s best to retreat and fight a different battle.

Aries is wilful

Not stubborn, as such, but wilful…ever tried moving a ram that doesn’t want to be moved? I rest my case.

Aries needs space

That spark won’t blaze without room to move. Don’t try and hold him too close- it gets way too hot for comfort. Besides, the flame will be smothered and where’s the interest in that?

Aries is irresistible

What can I say? The stars and the sun dance to your drum…

Aries is energising

Energy breeds energy…right? Being with Aries is like a shot of pure adrenaline- energising and uplifting. Being in the centre of an Aries whirlwind lifts you higher than nothing else can.

Aries is charismatic

Just like a camp fire that you can’t help being drawn to, Aries is warming, hypnotic, magnetic.

Aries is frustrating

Too much Aries can be exhausting, headache inducing (after all, Aries does rule the head) and immensely frustrating as they go from Plan A to Plan F and back again. It’s a good thing the Aries attention span is short- it gives you a break.

Aries needs attention

Flames need fuel to stay alight, and in the case of Aries, that fuel is attention and recognition. As my BMF says, ‘bring on the dancing girls and hallelujah chorus.” Too much fuel, though, and a good burn turns into an uncontrollable inferno.

Aries starts stuff

…but has a relatively short attention span, so isn’t so great at finishing long term projects…unless it’s a long term project with lots of spot fires that need fighting.

Aries burns fast

This is good if you’re on the receiving end of an Aries tantrum. Thanks to that short attention span, Aries doesn’t tend to hold a grudge…unless they have the Moon or Mars in one of those signs that does attach itself to a good grievance. Sure they’re willful, but just like a toddler, distraction is relatively easy. Yes, I speak from experience.

Aries is honest

Mainly because he doesn’t have the time or the inclination to be less than straight forward- Aries will always take the quickest path to wherever they need to get to. Water signs be warned- most of the time Aries has no idea that he’s upset you- he’s already moved on. As I say to my BMF all the time “hashtag need a bigger filter.”

Aries likes to win

Life is a competition…isn’t it? What’s the point of playing the game (whatever the game is) if you’re not there to win it? And let’s face it, Aries loves a game, or a chase…

Aries likes to be first

What’s the point of exploring something, inventing something, finding something, whatever, if it’s all been done before?

Remember

Everyone has Aries somewhere in their chart. It’s this part of life that you’ll approach with an Aries go- for- it, how hard could it possibly be? attitude. It’s also this part of life that the Sun is shining on for the next month. It’s this part of life that you need to take the initiative in.

If you have the Sun or Mars in the first house, or Sun conjunct Mars, or Aries on the Ascendant, you could recognise some of these qualities in yourself. If you have the Sun square or opposite Mars, you could recognise some of the shadow as well! Remember, how Arian you are will also depend on the sign of your Moon (amongst a host of other things) and the house that your Sun is in.

Happy Birthday Aries!

Fight For Your Right…Aries Full Moon

Illustration of aries astrological sign as a beautiful girl

I wrote last years Aries Full Moon and Lunar eclipse post from an extremely cool hotel room in Wellington, New Zealand. I was on a mini-break with Astrosparkles and we had plans to watch the eclipse from the highest point in Wellington. Sadly, the weather put a dampener (pun intended) on that.

Anyways, at that eclipse the south node of the Moon was falling exactly on my natal Venus at 19 Aries. Of course, I hadn’t noticed it. Of course, she suggested that perhaps I should. You can read that post here.

Nothing happened then…well, not in the happening with a capital h sense, anyway. That point, 19 Aries, has proven to be important. As recently as this week, as Uranus was conjunct this point, Venus was trine it.

Nothing Happened (in the capital H sense of the word), but stuff of a Uranus-Venus nature is happening. The Venus trine the other day was, I suspect, a trigger. I suspect it was also the culmination of the lunar themes of last years eclipse.

Mondays lunar eclipse starts a different cycle. This one falls conjunct my Saturn- within a couple of degrees. It occurs when Saturn is trine natal Saturn (to the degree, and very almost to the minute) and when Saturn is sextile the north node…and trine the south. Oh, and (importantly for me) Uranus is still at 19 Aries.

This- the nodal aspect- is an interesting one to look at, and worth talking about. There are opportunities to move forward into destiny, karmic sort of territory, but moving back into the safe bounds of what you know and what has been before, is also an easy option to take.

I know from my Moonshadow report (if you want your own Moonshadow report, you can order it via the linky thing on the sidebar), that eclipses in aspect to Saturn indicate crises of responsibility. It’s about reality, career and vocation, boundaries and self-sufficiency. It’s about creating your own reality and accepting responsibility for your part in your current situation- whatever it is that is. It’s easy to blame others, or to fall back into victim mentality. The report goes on to say that for these reasons, eclipses involving Saturn often correspond with frustrating work situations and struggles with management, boundaries and self-doubt.

I get that.

It reminds me of a great article I read this morning by Jessica from Moonkiss’d. She talked about how if you fall into a pothole once, that’s an accident. That if you fall into it again, you might blame someone else, but if you fall into it a third time, well, aside from being slow to learn your lesson, you only have yourself to blame.

My eclipse event occurred yesterday- you don’t need the details. Suffice to say, I’m in the mood to fight for something I believe in at the moment- to fight for someone and with someone I believe in, for a cause that has fairness, balance and justice written all over it.

Aries Moons tend to bring out the warrior in you- the question is always, though, whether what you’re fighting for, deserves to be fought for. And that’s where the cooler, calmer, rationality of the Sun in Libra comes into it.

Wherever 4 Aries 40’ falls in your chart is where you might be facing these issues- where your inner warrior is donning her camo gear.

Doing it for yourself…

By now you should know the drill. If not, check out this post as a refresher.

You’re looking for 4 Aries 40’. The symbol for Aries is below.

8321072_xl

Normally, I’d use an orb of 2 degrees (more for aspects to Sun and Moon), but this is an eclipse, so let’s take it a little wider- out to 4 degrees.

  • Any planet within 4 degrees either side of the Full Moon in the same sign as the Full Moon is conjunct the Full Moon, ie between 0-8 Aries.
  • Any planet within 4 degrees (either side) in the sign opposite the Full Moon is in opposition to the Full Moon, ie between 0-8 Libra.
  • Any planet within 4 degrees (either side) 3 signs around from the Full Moon, and in the same modality to the Full Moon is square to the Full Moon, ie between 0-8 Cancer or Capricorn.
  • Any planet within 4 degrees (either side) 4 signs around from the Full Moon, in the same element as the Full Moon is trine the Full Moon, ie between 0-8 Leo or Sagittarius.
  • Any planet within 4 degrees (either side) 2 signs around from the Full Moon, in the same polarity as the Full Moon is sextile the Full Moon, ie between 0-8 Aquarius or Gemini.

The lunar eclipse is exact-ish Monday 12.50pm in Australia, Monday 3.50am BST, Sunday 7.50pm PDT, 10:50pm EDT…or thereabouts.

Aries through the houses- Part 2

19314183_s

So the other day we looked at Aries on the cusp of houses 1-4.

Before we look at houses 5-8, a reminder… In general, regardless of your sun sign, wherever Aries is in your chart, will be the area of life that you dive into head-first, impulsively, wilfully, competitively, assertively and even aggressively. It’s where want to take the lead, where you want to be noticed, where you might enthusiastically start new projects, but not finish them and where you’re prepared to fight for or defend whatever is represented by this house. It’s also where your perception may be blinded, and where yours is the only opinion that matters…just putting that out there…

Also, don’t forget, planets in these houses and the aspects they make to other planets will add layers of meaning to this.

Aries on the cusp of the 5th house

You might dive headfirst and impulsively into love, romance, and fun. In fact, partying could be a competitive sport for you! Speaking of sport, as Mars rules this part of your life, you express yourself best through physical activity. You might be quick to start hobbies and projects, but not so good at seeing them through to completion.

When Mars is retrograde, take care that impatience and frustration doesn’t lead to avoidable accidents or sporting injuries.

Aries on the cusp of the 6th house

You throw yourself into your work- probably to the concern of colleagues- who need, somehow, to keep up. You like to take the lead, so your colleagues could find you demanding. When it comes to healthy habits, you might start something, but fail to stay the course if the results aren’t immediately apparent.

When Mars is retrograde, you need to take care of yourself a little more closely, and take care not to wear yourself out.

Aries on the cusp of the 7th house

When it comes to relationship, shrinking violets need not apply. Although, as a Libra Ascendant, you like balance and peace, you also need someone who will challenge you a little (or a lot), someone you can discover new frontiers with, and someone who’ll hold your interest past bin night. No matter if it appears that you’re the one compromising, behind the scenes, in your own way, you’re probably taking the lead in the relationship.

When Mars is retrograde, choose your battles and your words, carefully.

Aries on the cusp of the 8th house

You probably take the lead when it comes to decisions regarding joint financial matters, investments, taxes, inheritances etc. It’s an area of life where conflicts could regularly occur and where you are prepared to defend your position- even if it was made impulsively.

When Mars is retrograde, take care to read the fine print before proceeding.

Next time: Aries on the cusp of houses 9-12

Last time: Aries on the cusp of houses 1-4
