Mars in Scorpio

Later this evening Mars moves into Scorpio. For those of us with Mars in Scorpio, we get an energy reboot of the Martian kind…I’ve written about Mars returns before and will write about mine another time.

If you want to know what it’s like to have Mars in Scorpio, or if you are, know or love a Scorpio man, or even if you have Mars conjunct Pluto, you might want to have a read of this post about Mars in Scorpio.

Doing it for yourself…

For the rest of us, we all have Scorpio somewhere in our chart. This is where you’ll be getting a little extra oomph, focus, energy and drive…you’ll go after what you truly desire with passion and single-mindedness…

As always, the solar guide below is based on whole houses. If you use a different house system and know what house Scorpio covers in your chart, jump straight to that explanation. By now you should also know what the general themes of each house are about, but if not – or if you’re new to this site (and welcome- it’s lovely to see you here) – you can always check out this post.

If your rising sign is Scorpio, Mars is in your 1st house

If your rising sign is Sagittarius, Mars is in your 12th house

If your rising sign is Capricorn, Mars is in your 11th house

If your rising sign is Aquarius, Mars is in your 10th house

If your rising sign is Pisces, Mars is in your 9th house

If your rising sign is Aries, Mars is in your 8th house

If your rising sign is Taurus, Mars is in your 7th house

If your rising sign is Gemini, Mars is in your 6th house

If your rising sign is Cancer, Mars is in your 5th house

If your rising sign is Leo, Mars is in your 4th house

If your rising sign is Virgo, Mars is in your 3rd house

If your rising sign is Libra, Mars is in your 2nd house

Mars in Libra

The first thing we need to know about Mars in Libra is that Mars is in his detriment here – he’s operating from a sign where he doesn’t feel at all comfortable. A planet in the sign of his detriment – opposite the sign he rules, is the planetary equivalent of finding yourself somewhere completely unfamiliar with completely the wrong wardrobe, no local phrasebook, and rupiah when you need euros. You need to find another way to get what you need.

You see, Libra is a Venus-ruled sign and is all about pleasure, balance, peace and connections. Mars, on the other hand, is driven to win and push forward. Peace is the least of his concern. As for balance – what’s that? And who needs connections when you’re perfectly capable of doing something for yourself?

Libra is about evaluating the options and consulting with interested parties, bringing people of like minds together to achieve an outcome that will be a win for everyone. Mars just wants to get on with it already.

So, while Mars isn’t operating from a place where he’s at his best, this energy can absolutely be used for good. In Libra, Mars’ energy is directed towards the process of relating. In Libra he gets what he wants by being charming, using diplomacy and finding the compromise points in all situations. He achieves his goals by using his head and his connections, not his brawn. He searches for peace, harmony, beauty and balance.

Mars in Leo

One I prepared much earlier…

Mars is a hot and dry planet, so likes to create energy and activity. In Cancer (a cold and wet sign), it felt like it was trying to push through mud. Quite frankly, that’s what many of us did feel like- particularly if you are a Fire sign, or have a strong Martian presence (eg Aries Rising or Scorpio Rising).

Leo, ruled by the Sun, is a Fire sign- and the longest, strongest burn-iest (I just made that word up) of the fire signs. Mars in Leo is very like the Sun itself and generally has a following within his orbit to prove it. Mars in Leo very much relishes the hotter conditions, and the opportunity to shine.

In Aries, Mars’ energy is used to spark creative and physical energy. In Leo, it is all about the follow through- in more ways than one. His energy lasts longer, creates excitement, and ensures admiration. Mars in Leo is exciting, passionate, charismatic and committed.

OK, Mars in Leo is also egotistical and sometimes arrogant, but seriously, what’s not to like?  The energy, excitement and sheer romance of Mars in Leo draws admirers into the flame despite their own better judgment. The strong and steady sex drive doesn’t hurt either – although the temper – of tantrum like proportions – often can. Mars in Leo can also build up and maintain a pretty good sulk if he feels he isn’t being appreciated.

He is supremely proud. Even when things don’t look as bright as they could be and he is staring down the barrel of uncertainty, he will cover insecurities with an admirable bravado. He will always have a few more irons in the fire, so to speak. He goes after what he wants with what is almost a dramatic arrogance, pride and a need for recognition.

I’ve mentioned Laurence Hillman’s brilliant book Planets in Play before. Seriously, if you are a visual person, his premise of popping the planets on a stage and draping them in costumes is a revelation when it comes to understanding how the planets may play out in your chart. In any case, this is what he has to say about Mars in Leo:

“This warrior goes into war with the blessings of his king. He wears the finest uniform you can imagine, with colours and medals galore. He carries the king’s flag in his hand & the royal insignia on his saddlebags. He rides the finest and most powerful horse. He leads the way proudly into battle and will gladly die a hero, if he is just memorialized.”

Think of the Leo men in your life, or indeed, the men with Leo Ascendants. Their horse may be a flashy sports car or the biggest and most powerful V8 engine-but you get the idea. And he will take pride in how he looks, which is, by the way, usually pretty damned good.

Men with Mars in Leo (or Leo Men) will woo their partners in the old fashioned romantic sense of the word with gifts, bling and dramatic flair. This is real courtier type behaviour. Mars in Leo wants it all to last – the romance is a very vital part of the way in which love is expressed. He wants a woman he can be proud of, and he wants her to conduct herself with decorum – like a queen.

To Leo man, there is never an excuse for trackies, ugg boots and unshaven legs in public. Ever. For him to respect you, he expects that you will show the same respect to yourself – and that means taking care of how you look.

He also wants you to notice him. If he has been working out, notice it. If he has a new shirt, notice it. Sure all fire signs can be a little selfish, but underneath the leonine exterior, this guy is warn, generous and demonstrative.

Women with Mars in Leo need to be treated like a Queen. They will be drawn to partners who show Leo characteristics- charismatic and admired by others. Partners with a healthy level of confidence and self-respect. They like to bask in reflected glory and be proud of who they are with.

He may have personal planets in Leo, Mars in aspect to the Sun or a packed 5th house…or just a big chariot.

Doing it for yourself…

We all have Leo somewhere in our chart, and it’s this part of life that’s about to get an energy hit from Mars.

What sort of energy? Leo represents creativity, self-expression and the things we give birth to- physically and symbolically. Leo is associated with the 5th house and identity security – and the more secure we are in our identity, the more prepared we are to take the risk to express ourselves fully. This is the Leo challenge and Mars, sick of treading water, just might give you the courage to do that.

Pull your chart out and look for the symbol of Leo.

If you don’t have your chart, read this post on how to get one.

If you don’t know what the houses mean, check out series 1 of the Toolbox or this post.

If you don’t have any idea about your birth time, or can’t be faffed working it out, you can follow the solar guide below. Of course, if you know exactly where Mars is in your chart, go straight to that house.

Mars in Leo will transit my 6th house. This is about work, health and habits – and I have some not so healthy habits that need a definite boot up the whatever!

Over to you…

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Leo, Mars will be transiting your 1st house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Virgo, Mars will be transiting your 12th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Libra, Mars will be transiting your 11th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Scorpio, Mars will be transiting your 10th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Sagittarius, Mars will be transiting your 9th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Capricorn, Mars will be transiting your 8th house.
  • If your Sun of Ascendant is in Aquarius, Mars will be transiting your 7th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces, Mars will be transiting your 6th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aries, Mars will be transiting your 5th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus, Mars will be transiting your 4th house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Gemini, Mars will be transiting your 3rd house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Cancer, Mars will be transiting your 2nd house.

Mars will be in Leo until 5 September, 2017.

Mars in Cancer

My dad tells this joke about three old drovers* who are sitting around in a pub. They’re remembering days gone by and achievements of the past.

Drover 1 says, ‘I remember the time I took a mob of cattle from Darwin down to Birdsville. Bloody long way that was.’

Drover 2 nods his respect and says, ‘Yair, I remember I took a mob clean across the Nullabor and down into Adelaide.’

Drover 3 sinks his beer, wipes his mouth and says, ‘yair, I’ll pay those runs. But did I ever tell you about the time I took 500 head of cattle all the way from Perth, across the Nullabor, and down into Hobart?’

Drover 1 raises his eyebrows. ‘But Hobart’s in Tasmania,’ he said, ‘and Tasmania’s an island. How’d you get em across the water?’

‘I took em around the other way, didn’t I?’

Ok, if you’re not an Aussie, or an Aussie 78 year old man, you’re probably not going to get the joke, but it makes my dad laugh every time he tells it – it’s hard not to laugh with him.

But what has that got to do with astrology? Easy, Mars will move into Cancer – and the sign of his fall – later today. Stay with me – I’ll explain.

It sounds a little like a Greek tragedy really. Indeed any of you with a strong Mars, or Mars as their chart ruler may find the next few weeks a bit of a wash-out, energy wise.

In Capricorn (the opposite sign to Cancer), Mars is exalted – exaggerated, if you like. When a planet is in the sign of its’ exaltation it is like he is a favoured guest. The ruling planet owns the home (in the case of Capricorn, this is Saturn), but the planet in exaltation will be given the favoured guest treatment – the fluffiest towels, the plumpest pillows, the 1000 count Egyptian cotton sheets, and the visitor biscuits.

When that planet travels into the opposing sign, however, very much the opposite occurs. Not only is the planet uncomfortable in this position, but he feels worse that he actually is – sort of like having man flu – and behaves and performs differently to how he usually would.

So it is now with Mars. In terms of essential nature, Mars is the hottest and driest and most masculine of all the planets. Cancer, on the other hand, is wet, cold and, being ruled by the Moon, possibly the most feminine of signs. It stands to reason that Mars isn’t going to feel comfortable there. His feet are wet, he’s feeling soft and squidgy around the edges and is suffering just a tad from a bit of bloating or water retention.

Then there’s the movement thing. Mars needs forward momentum – and he’s not interested in the past except in terms of glimpsing it in the rear view mirror as he goes tearing into the future. Cancer likes to come at things sideways – from another direction…like a crab. And Mars really can’t be faffed with that sort of palaver.

So, if we put it all together, as far as Mars is concerned, he’s somewhere where doesn’t particularly like to visit. The house is cold and he is stuck inside with the worst relatives he could possibly imagine.  Sure, the food is good, but everyone seems to be sitting around chatting about what the kids are up to and re-hashing the stuff from the past that no longer has any relevance but that has taken on the shine that only hindsight can bring. Like you do when you’re somewhere you don’t really want to be, things seem worse than they really are. Exaggeratedly so.

Ok, if you’re Mars, that probably doesn’t sound great, but the thing is, for the next 6 weeks or so, he just needs to learn to work differently – to see things from the Cancer point of view.

The thing we tend to forget or overlook about Cancer – one of the things – is that as a cardinal sign, despite what you might think, it is still about initiating action to protect or preserve something. Yes, Cancer is an action or initiating sign. This means that whatever it is that Cancer represents in your chart is what Mars will be taking action on for the next 6 weeks or so. This part of life will be getting a surge of energy. It’s just that the way in which he acts is different.

You can make the most of this by resisting the urge to barge ahead – that won’t get you anywhere. Nurture what needs to be nurtured and, just like drover number 3, look for another way around – a way that won’t leave you exposed. You’ll get much further.

Another thing about Mars in Cancer – frustration can lead to comfort eating, so consider also what you’re really hungry for…and what you’re scared of exposing.

Mars in Cancer will transit my 5th house. In the past it’s been a time of increased creativity – well, I guess that’s one of the things that the 5th house is about! The 5th house is a security house, and fear of exposing emotional vulnerabilities through self-expression is a biggie here too. As I get ready to present at August’s Romance Writer’s Conference the confidence I had when I first pitched my idea, is giving way to fears that no one will come to my session – or will be disappointed if they do. The subject of my workshop? How you can use astrology to create more believable and layered characters.

Mars in Gemini

So anyways, Mars moves into Gemini today.

He didn’t feel particularly comfortable in Taurus – things don’t happen quickly enough there for Mars’ liking. Even the words don’t come quickly or easily – in fact, sometimes in Taurus the words can’t seem to come out at all. They get stuck somewhere between the heart and the head – in the throat.

By the time Mars hits Gemini, he has energy to burn and a brain full of words just waiting to come out of his mouth into a succinct, yet effective argument; social engagements to keep, and friends to catch up with.

Mars in Gemini is motivated by new connections, learning new skills, and pretty much anything that stimulates his curiosity. If you want to know more about Mars in Gemini – or Gemini men – check out this post.

In my chart, Gemini is the 4th house – and boy, am I focusing energy on the house at the moment! We’re doing a lot of entertaining at home, and basically learning our way around the appliances. We’re also solving storage issues; working out where pictures get hung; wondering why the pump attached to the water tank runs all night; and finding someone clever to come and hook up all the cords that connect the TV to apple TV, foxtel, the speakers, and the projector TV.

Mars will be in Gemini until June 5, 2017.

Mars in Taurus – Going The Distance

The first thing we need to know about Mars in Taurus is that Mars is in his detriment here – he’s operating from a sign where he doesn’t feel at all comfortable.

You see, Taurus is a Venus-ruled sign and is all about pleasure and taking the time to smell the roses. Mars, on the other hand, is driven to win and push forward. Taurus’ motivations are around physical security and her goals are closely aligned to achieving this.

Taurus is about conserving energy and prefers to expel it efficiently and steadily. Mars wants to burn.

If we put this together, in Taurus, Mars’ energy is steady, controlled and strong. He’s slow to anger, but once in that mode, can be slow to switch back. Raging bull anyone?

Once he’s decided that he wants someone or something he’s prepared to work for it and will be there for the long haul. Mars in Taurus has immense staying power and can go the distance.

When he’s made up his mind, there’s very little that will change it – adaptability is not Taurus’ strong suit – and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Likewise, if he has achieved his goals and acquired whatever it was he desired, he is reluctant to relinquish it. This goes for relationships too.

If you have Mars in Taurus, you might need some persuasion to get moving after whatever it is that you need to get moving after, but once you’ve started – moving, that is – there’s very little that will stop you.

What does he want – Mars in Taurus? He has an appetite – in more ways than one. He also wants to feel comfortable, secure and to have “enough”….whatever enough actually means.

Mars In Aries: It’s Getting Hot In Here

Mars in Aries…oh be still my beating heart!

Is it just me or is it getting hot in here?

Mars rules Aries, so is at his strongest, most physical, most vital, most impulsive, most headstrong, most independent here.

Mars is a hot and masculine planet and Aries a hot, cardinal, and masculine sign, so this is arguably the most masculine and direct of energy forces. It burns hot indeed. Sure, this can mean bulging biceps and all of that rather obvious, clichéd, and a little bit yummy masculinity (if you like that sort of thing, of course), but it isn’t just about the physical. It’s about how that energy is directed – and in Aries, energy is activated in clear lines outwardly. I know a few Aries men who don’t at all fit the clichéd image of Aries – not physically anyway… but, man, their energy is pure irrepressible Aries – and that’s what we’re talking about here.

Anyways, of you want to know more, I’ve written (a lot) more about Mars in Aries here. Don’t forget, what I describe is the energy in its purest form – the impact of other planets will affect that. e.g. my daughter has the Sun, Mars, Mercury and Saturn in Aries. While she is serious Aries energy, the influence of Saturn gives that energy a slower, more measured burn. Just saying.

Doing it for yourself…

We all have Aries somewhere in our chart, and it’s this part of life that’s about to get an energy hit from Mars.I joke with one Aries guy I know, that it’s like he’s a kid on red cordial having a permanent sugar rush. Totally exhausting, yet at the same time, inspiring. It’s that energy that you want to harness in whatever part of life it is that Mars is moving through for you.

Pull your chart out and look for the symbol of Aries. It’s like a ram’s horns.

If you don’t have your chart, read this post on how to get one.

Mars for me will transit from the 1st to the 2nd house. Mars in Aries is providing me with the energy to take some direct action on myself and my money – to actively pursue what I want in those areas of life..

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Taurus, Mars will be transiting your 12th house.

  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Aquarius, Mars will be transiting your 3rd house.
  • If your Sun or Ascendant is in Pisces, Mars will be transiting your 2nd house.

Mars will be in Aries from 28 January to 10 March, 2017.

Mars in Capricorn: Taking Care of Business

shutterstock_185621123

Before I started writing this post, I did what I always do whenever a planet changes signs: I go looking for what I’ve written before. After all, why re-invent the wheel if it’s still doing what it should be doing.

You know what I found? Nothing…well, next to nothing. How have I never written anything about Mars in Capricorn?

So, just as I did the other day with my Libra post, I’ve turned to the small screen- and to the man who represents Mars in Capricorn better than I could ever explain.

Allow me to introduce you to Harvey Specter from the TV show Suits.

harvey-specter

A persona disclaimer from me at this point: as attractive as he is, Harvey leaves me cold. Anyways, like him or loathe him (and plenty of women I know seem to love him), Harvey Specter is a corporate warrior. Harvey treats the world of business as if it’s a battlefield. Every deal, every negotiation is a war to be won. His isn’t a flashy, spangly gold-plated armour, it’s under-stated and quietly, expensively, luxurious- only the best brands will do for Harvey. You don’t need to see the logo to know that the suit he’s wearing cost $3000, and the shoes the same.

harvey-luck

Harvey knows what he wants, and he knows that he’s going to need to work- and compete- in order to get it. That’s ok- Harvey knows that any luck he has he’s made himself. He also knows that the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. (In case you’re wondering, there are entire sites devoted to Harvey quote memes.)

harvey_specter

Harvey is the consummate professional. He’s efficient, smart and knows where to invest his resources where they will be of most use. He’s a climber, and isn’t afraid to stamp on the hands of those trying to climb behind him- if they get too close. Harvey knows that dreaming isn’t enough- if you want to make something happen, you have to make it happen.

harvey

Saturn ruled Capricorn is cautious and disciplined, and Mars is how you assert yourself. Put this together and you have someone who can control his sexual energy. You also have someone who could use this to get what he wants. Harvey knows this.

Mars in a man’s chart also tells us how he might go about selling himself- or getting who and what he wants. Harvey, when he wants a woman, sells himself to her in terms of what he can provide her materially. Underneath though, we know that what’s really turning her on is all of that strong, and oh so earthy, sexual energy. Yes, I’ve watched a lot of episodes of Suits.

When it comes to women, Harvey plays it cool. He’s a tad detached and very inscrutable. Harvey doesn’t like to be rejected, and has been known to play it a teeny bit safe and not put himself out there with a woman until he’s pretty sure he won’t be rejected. Besides, who could possibly reject Harvey Specter. Harvey also likes to be respected for his experience- and he has plenty of that. Prowess and hard-won expertise such as his requires praise. Although he refuses to let emotions get in the way at work or in the way of a deal, they’re simmering away underneath. Simmering, I say. Remember those episodes where we saw Harvey lose a girlfriend because of a deal? It was a reminder to him that there needs to be that line between business and love.

Harvey Specter aside, what else can I say about Mars in Capricorn? Just that Mars is super-strong here. Remembering back to Toolbox no whatever about dignities, Mars is in the sign of his exaltation in Capricorn. Not just does he feel at home here, but he’s a favoured visitor- one who’s had the 1000 count sheets put on the bed and the special visitor biscuits brought out for.

We’ve talked a lot about Harvey Specter and men with Mars in Capricorn, but what about if you’re a woman with Mars in Capricorn? Well, you’ll probably have that same strong determination, that same ambition and earthy sexuality; and you’ll probably be attracted to men who are perhaps a little like Harvey. He might have the Sun, Moon or personal planets in Capricorn, or perhaps Mars conjunct, in close aspect to Saturn, or in the 10th house.

Doing it for yourself…

We all have Capricorn somewhere in our chart, and it’s this part of life that’s about to get an energy hit from Mars.

Pull your chart out and look for the symbol of Capricorn. It’s like a v with a flourish.

If you don’t have your chart, read this post on how to get one.

If you don’t know what the houses mean, check out series 1 of the Toolbox or this post.

If you don’t have any idea about your birth time, or can’t be faffed working it out, you can follow the solar guide below.

Mars for me will transit from the 10th to the 11th house. The 11th is about goals, hopes, dreams, friends, networks, the reward from the work we do. While Mars is in this part of the chart and conjunct Pluto I’ll be releasing my new novel Wish You Were Here. I’m timing it to coincide with when the Sun and Mercury are conjunct my natal Mars in Scorpio. This book is getting the biggest burst of Martian energy that I can give it!
